About This Position
Position Summary
The MEP Superintendent is responsible for the field leadership, coordination, and execution of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and controls work on data center construction projects. This role ensures MEP systems are installed safely, in accordance with design and quality standards, and sequenced properly to support commissioning and energization milestones. The MEP Superintendent works closely with the Project Manager, General Superintendent, commissioning agent, and trade partners to deliver reliable, mission-critical infrastructure on schedule and within budget.
Position Description
The MEP Superintendent leads day-to-day field operations for critical power, cooling, and building systems on ground-up and retrofit data center projects. This role is heavily focused on installation quality, system readiness, inspection compliance, and turnover discipline required for high-availability facilities. The Superintendent drives trade coordination, resolves field conflicts, and ensures all MEP scopes progress in alignment with the overall project schedule and commissioning plan.
Key Responsibilities
MEP Field Execution
Lead and coordinate all MEP subcontractors and self-perform crews. Oversee installation of critical systems including: Medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution UPS systems and battery rooms Generators and paralleling gear Chilled water and condenser water systems CRAH/CRAC units and in-row cooling Building management and controls systems Verify installations conform to drawings, specifications, and manufacturer requirements. Drive proper system installation sequencing to support commissioning.Trade Coordination
Conduct daily coordination with electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and controls trades. Identify and resolve spatial conflicts and trade stacking issues. Partner with BIM/VDC teams to validate constructability and field installation plans. Lead MEP coordination meetings and pull-planning sessions. Ensure timely release of work fronts and material readiness.Safety Leadership
Promote a zero-incident safety culture across all MEP activities. Enforce LOTO, energized work permits, confined space, and hot work protocols. Conduct MEP-focused safety audits and toolbox talks. Partner with the site safety team on incident investigations and corrective actions. Ensure compliance with OSHA and client-specific safety requirements.Quality Assurance / Quality Control
Ensure MEP installations meet contract documents and commissioning standards. Verify completion of ITPs, pre-functional checklists, and quality documentation. Support inspection readiness and AHJ coordination. Drive early deficiency identification and rapid closure. Ensure proper labeling, tagging, and documentation of critical systems.Schedule & Planning
Develop and manage detailed MEP look-ahead schedules (3-week and 6-week). Monitor progress against the master schedule and commissioning milestones. Identify risks to energization, wet-side readiness, and turnover dates. Implement recovery plans when required. Coordinate long-lead equipment setting and rigging activities.Commissioning & Turnover
Partner closely with the Commissioning Agent (CxA) and PM team. Ensure systems are mechanically complete and ready for testing. Coordinate Level 1–5 commissioning activities. Drive punch list completion and system turnover packages. Support phased energization and integrated systems testing (IST). Maintain focus on Ready-for-Service (RFS) milestones.Client & Stakeholder Interface
Serve as primary field contact for MEP-related client matters. Participate in OAC and MEP coordination meetings. Provide clear and timely field status updates. Support owner witness testing and milestone walkthroughs. Maintain strong relationships in high-visibility environments.Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree preferred. 10+ years of construction experience with significant MEP field leadership. 5+ years in a Superintendent or Lead MEP field role. Demonstrated experience on data center, mission-critical, or large industrial projects. Strong working knowledge of: Critical electrical distribution systems Mechanical cooling plants Controls and BMS systems Commissioning processes Ability to read and interpret MEP drawings, one-lines, and P&IDs. OSHA 30-hour certification (or ability to obtain).Preferred Qualifications
Hyperscale data center project experience. Experience with Level 4–5 commissioning environments. Electrical or mechanical trade background. Experience with energization and LOTO programs. BIM/VDC coordination experience. NFPA 70E familiarity. CPR/First Aid certification.Core Competencies
