Job Description

  • Position Summary
    • Assists the Hematology & Oncology Physicians in the delivery of care to patients in both the outpatient office and hospital settings. Functions in a liaison capacity for the hospital and physicians with the patients and community. In collaboration with physicians, hospital staff, and administration, provides marketing to patients, physicians, and the community in order to recruit and receive patients from throughout the region.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Work Experience
      • Two years of experience as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with demonstrated leadership skills preferred.

    • Education
      • Master's degree (or higher) in Nursing required.

    • Certifications/Licensure
      • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (or temporary work permit) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky required.
      • APRN Certification from a board recognized national organization required.
      • DEA License required within 6 months from date of eligibility.

      • Provides patient care in the outpatient hematology/oncology office setting within scope of practice. Rounds on hematology oncology inpatients as needed under the direction of the hematology oncology specialist and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
      • Performs patient history and physical assessments. Orders, performs, and or/interprets diagnostic testing appropriate to the patient’s specific condition or complaints. Analyzes patient data and develops plans of care. Consults with physician and refers to appropriate specialists.
      • Prescribes medications appropriate for each patient’s condition within the guidelines of federal and state laws. Utilizes principles of pain management along with physician consultation for patients with chronic malignant and non-malignant pain.
      • Documents pertinent patient information and assists as needed in maintaining the chart in accordance with departmental specifications. Assists in collecting and maintaining statistical and quality improvement data through proper documentation for administrative and regulatory purposes.
      • Serves on oncology committees and task forces as designated.
      • Services regional referral sources on a routine basis and explores new growth opportunities for oncology services and increased referral sources and alliances. Continually assesses and analyzes regional market capability to utilize outreach/satellite clinics and develop potential plans to pursue the market potential. Devises marketing and patient recruitment/referral strategies for oncology services provided by Medical Center Hematology & Oncology with the marketing department. Reports findings to The Medical Center administration for review and assistance to proceed.
      • Acts as a resource between patients, families, and available resources (staff, physicians, third party payers, outside service providers). Coordinates educational resources for patients, family members, and other caregivers.
      • Serves as a liaison between oncology services and clinical/ancillary departments of The Medical Center to achieve optimal outcomes. Facilitates physicians’ needs for access to hospital services related to all oncology services and patient dismissal processes.
      • Provides follow-up on referrals to hematology oncology services to the referring physician and/or hospital or office practice assuring smooth transfer to The Medical Center and access to services.
      • Seeks methods of improving the physicians’, patients’, and families’ hospital experience through improved clinical and managerial skills, optimal ease of access to department resources. Collaborates with hospital departments and physician office staff to promote efficient patient progress.
      • Accountable for The Medical Center’s overall responsiveness to the individual and/or group practice needs of oncology services. Available to physician’s office staff as a resource person in coordinating diagnostic testing, surgery scheduling and admissions when needed.
      • Visits physician offices to promote collaboration and ensure availability of diagnostic testing and scheduling, oncology treatment plans and continued follow-up.
      • Makes clinical rounds to follow with critical paths results ensuring that care is coordinated smoothly and efficiently and cost effectively. Concurrently reviews patient admission data within the designated time frames and initiates appropriate clinical path.
      • Reports patient progress and outcomes to the hematology oncology specialist and assists in identifying opportunities for improvement.
      • Facilitate and participate in local CME events held by the oncology department.
      • Collaborates with the physician and treatment team in determining discharge planning needs. Reviews case to ascertain problems with implementation of discharge plan. Shares results of analysis with physicians, clinical staff, and leaders.
      • Demonstrates and applies knowledge of the standards of The Joint Commission, Medicare, state rules and regulations as well as prospective payment systems. Keeps abreast of changes under prospective payment system. Applies the hospital’s managed care current contract terms and HMO, P.P.O. arrangements. Stays abreast of the literature and the current state of capitation products.
