Description:

Avalon Risk Management (“Avalon”) is a specialty insurance broker with offices in major port cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. We focus on the unique and exciting world of risk management and insurance products for the international trade and logistics industry. Avalon is a privately held company owned by our founding management team and we are proud that our average employee tenure is over 10 years. We are looking for someone with natural attention to detail to support our Property and Casualty team at our headquarters in Schaumburg, IL.

Our ideal candidate has 1-3 years’ professional office or customer service experience and has strong computer skills. Past experiences navigating a records system such as for insurance policies, customer relationship management, insurance or medical billing, etc. are transferable. Prior commercial insurance or personal lines insurance environment is a plus. The Assistant Underwriter will have excellent written communication skills. Strong organizational skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines are a must. This position supports the P&C underwriting team by coordinating actions using our policy management system including data entry, cross checking & auditing, and reminder tracking. Using these programs, the Assistant Underwriter will follow automated prompts to kick off and track actions. Other responsibilities include:

1. Key Responsibilities

  • Review applications and policy information for completeness and accuracy.
  • Update renewal submissions with exposures received from insureds.
  • Issue endorsements in Insurance Company system for assigned lines (e.g. BOP and Package and their related coverages).
  • Reconcile Additional Interests between Policy and Agency Management System.
  • Issue policies in Insurance Company System as instructed by Underwriters.
  • Prepare and Issue Proposals from Agency Management System for completed quotes.
  • Compile and organize underwriting data such as Experience Mods, loss history, FMCSA Licensing and Insurance Database Carrier Profiles, Business Entity Searches, etc.
  • Send letters to insureds for policy lapses, supplemental extended reporting quotes (“SERP”), and CA Medical panels.
  • Review and process automated monthly Legal Notices generated by the automated process
  • Help identify opportunities for improved efficiency and quality.
  • Monitor and follow up on outstanding documentation.
  • Create P&L Statements as assigned by Underwriter or manager.
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned by Manager (e.g. audit support tasks).

2. Communication & Customer Service

  • Communicate with agents, brokers, and internal teams to clarify submission information and resolve discrepancies.
  • Serve as a first point of contact for routine questions concerning policies, endorsement, and loss history requests.

3. Workflow & Process Management

  • Monitor Tableau dashboard for SLA metrics to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Assist in managing filing systems, correspondence, and underwriting tracking lists.
  • Complete tasks in Workflow system (e.g Zendesk) as assigned by underwriter.

Education & Experience

  • 1–3+ years of professional office support or customer service experience (commercial P&C preferred).

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams). Experience with underwriting systems, rating platforms, and Applied Epic is a plus.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and accurate data-entry skills.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • High degree of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
  • Ability to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Customer service orientation and team collaboration.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Property & Casualty insurance license required within 120 days of hire.
  • Pursuit of appropriate industry designations (e.g. CIC, CRM, CPCU) is a plus.

  • The Assistant Underwriter position offers growth opportunities within the Property & Casualty insurance department. Successful candidates may advance to P&C Underwriter, Level 1 & 2, Senior Underwriter, or other specialized roles as they gain experience and demonstrate proficiency in risk analysis and portfolio management.
