GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB: The Staff Nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of the patients on his/her assigned unit during a given tour of duty.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Licensure: Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in West Virginia.
Education and/or Experience:Previous experience may be required in specialty areas.
Communication Skills: Must possess good oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate with all hospital contacts both on the telephone and directly.
Computer/Typing/Mathematical Skills: Must be or become familiar with the hospital computer system. Minimal typing skills required.
Healthcare BCLS validation within 60 days of hire, NRP required within 6 months of hire with recertification as indicated every 2 years.
UNIT SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
The labor and delivery staff nurse will be responsible for the direct and indirect care of the patients on a given tour of duty utilizing the nursing process. The staff RN will perform nursing care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum women, and well newborns. The nurse will be able to perform specialized care to meet the needs of all laboring patients and the unborn infant in a family – centered atmosphere. The nurse will be able to assist the physician with surgical procedures as needed. The nurse will be able to circulate in a vaginal and cesarean delivery and assist with resuscitation of the newborn. The nurse will precept new staff and students assigned to the unit.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Staff Nurse may be assigned as a team leader/charge nurse in which case he/she is responsible for the direction and supervision of personnel assigned to his/her tour of duty.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Visual Acuity –Must be able to see to assess patient’s condition, both physical characteristics and nonverbal communications. Must be able to monitor technical equipment within job responsibilities.
2. Hearing Acuity – Must be able to hear to assess patient’s condition. Must be able to distinguish variations in sounds.
3. Manual Dexterity – Must be able to manipulate and operate equipment.
4. Oral Communication – Must possess good oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate with all hospital contacts both on the telephone and directly.
5. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to withstand repeated bending, and be able to assume awkward positions which may be needed in transferring, positioning, and restraining patients. Considerable lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and/or crouching.
6. Must have the ability to respond to emergency situations.
7. Must have stamina to work 40 hours per week with rotating shifts, weekends or overtime as needed.
8. Must be able to access all areas of the patient’s room including bathroom.
AGE APPROPRIATENESS: Assesses developmental level and plans age appropriate nursing care related to physical, psychological and emotional needs. Must have the ability to communicate with developmental ages (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and older adult) as indicated in the unit scope of care.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works in well-lighted, well-ventilated, heated and air-conditioned environment. May be subject to low level noise. May be exposed to blood and blood borne pathogens in routine performance of job duties.

- Prefer one year of medical/surgical/nursing experience
- Previous one year labor and delivery and/or operating room experience is desirable
- Basic Fetal Monitoring Course required upon hire
- AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring course completed within 2 years of employment, no recurrence requirement (based on course availability).
- If unable to obtain Intermediate FHM course within 2 years, staff will be provided with on-line FHM-CAT (Fetal Heart Monitoring-Case Assessment and Testing) exam and receive certificate of completion until AWHONN course available.
- All staff will be able to care for well mothers and well babies
- Meet all hospital wide education yearly
- All staff will be required to maintain competencies
