Maintenance Mechanic

Availability: Full time (40hr/week) Monday - Friday with a flexible start time.
General Summary:
Performs the Garden’s daily equipment, tool, and vehicle maintenance and services. This includes but not limited to cars, trucks, gas and electric utility carts, gas and electric outdoor power equipment, diesel and gasoline construction/forestry equipment and facility equipment and systems. Adheres to policies, procedures, and systems that support the overall mission and strategies of the organization through maintaining the grounds, assets, support systems, and physical appearance of the Garden in an exceptional manner.
Essential Duties:
- Works independently and with other department staff to perform the maintenance and repair of the Garden’s vehicle, cart, and equipment fleet.
- Works closely with the Manager of Site Operations to ensure the maintenance of the Garden’s equipment vehicles and tools, incorporating both a responsive repair and preventive maintenance approach that details an ongoing, actionable plan. Supervises the resources or directly performs regular, documented inspections to identify repairs and improvements required.
- Works within and assists with the ongoing use and improvement of work order/asset management program.
- Solves problems related to mechanical and electrical troubleshooting as part of vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Small scale fabrication or repair of steel frames, assembly racks, etc. to support ongoing operations.
- Works collaboratively with other departments to support both the goals of the department as well as the entire organization.
- May occasionally perform tasks related to facility or site maintenance including routine survey of the facilities and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED required and 2 years of experience with general small engine, equipment and vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting that includes demonstrated experience in coordinating logistics and services required to provide full-service support. Practical, hands-on experience repairing and operating a variety commercial equipment and tools, including but not limited to landscaping equipment, tractors, skid loaders, HD trucks, etc.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, which is subject to insurability and an annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) report.

- Strong knowledge of general maintenance disciplines.
- Ability to efficiently use a computer including online programs like asset management, work order systems, online sourcing and ordering of parts, and standard Microsoft applications like word and excel.

- Ability to work under pressure and to meet multiple deadlines. A self-starter who excels at problem solving and the ability to identify issues and consider multiple solutions. Enthusiastic learner who demonstrates a strong attention to esthetics detail.
- Decision making skills, time management skills and the ability to prioritize.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with welding (certification not required) soldering, oxy/acetylene and general metal fabrication preferred.
- Experience with electric cart/equipment maintenance, diesel engine maintenance, hydraulic system maintenance or general industrial/ commercial maintenance is preferred.
- Professional certifications in equipment or vehicle maintenance or other related trades preferred.
- Experience in a complex environment of multi-building campus serving a public 7-day a week operation preferred.

- Physical Demands: Requires frequent physical activity: lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., team lifts of items over 50 lbs is occasionally required, frequently traverses varied terrain, and travels across Garden in vehicles. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment.
- Work Environment: Office environment and Garden grounds. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
- Equipment: General office equipment, two-way radio, multiple types of vehicles, basic hand power tools.
