Position Summary
Provides clinical and supervisory leadership for nursing and patient care operations in the clinic setting. Oversees nursing staff, coordinates safe and effective patient care, supports clinical quality and regulatory compliance, and provides direct nursing care within the Registered Nurse scope of practice.
Scope and Impact
Supervises and coordinates clinic patient care operations and nursing personnel, including clinical competencies, staff education, delegation, quality control and quality assurance activities. The role provides direct patient care, triage and emergency response; supports clinic operations, supplies and vendor coordination; and collaborates across clinical and support functions to improve patient outcomes.
Decision Making Authority
Exercises nursing judgment in patient assessment, triage, prioritization, urgent and emergency response, medication and treatment administration, and delegation of nursing and laboratory responsibilities. Makes day-to-day supervisory decisions regarding patient care operations, staff competency, workflow and compliance while consulting the Medical Director, providers and Medical Operations Manager as appropriate.
Interactions / Working Relationships
Works closely with the Medical Operations Manager, Medical Director, physicians and other providers, nursing and laboratory personnel, Staff Development, Charity Referral, Quality Improvement and Performance Committee members, building management, vendors, patients and families. Coordinates clinical care, education, referrals, quality activities, testing competency and operational needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises and coordinates patient care operations; ensures care plans are understood by patients, align with provider orders and are properly documented; and oversees, assists, evaluates, supervises and counsels nursing staff as appropriate.
- Maintains and evaluates staff competencies, plans educational and professional development opportunities, mentors nursing personnel, develops clinical curriculum, and builds the technical and professional skills of the multilevel nursing team.
- Provides direct nursing care including clinical assessment, patient and family education, preparation for exams/treatments/procedures, venipuncture, blood glucose and laboratory procedures, inhalation therapy, intravenous therapy, medication and treatment administration as ordered, and accurate medical-record documentation.
- Triages, assesses and prioritizes patients based on acuity and severity in person and by telephone; identifies urgent or emergency situations and responds appropriately; and consults with providers and the Medical Director regarding patient care, assessment and teaching needs.
- Implements and supports MHM policies and procedures; identifies needs for new standards, policies and procedures; and ensures compliance with safety, infection control, administrative guidelines and applicable reporting requirements, including communicable disease reporting.
- Delegates responsibilities to nursing and/or laboratory personnel and verifies appropriate performance; collaborates with Staff Development to ensure testing personnel have required education, training, demonstrated competency and documentation for accurate and reliable testing.
- Oversees quality control and quality assessment activities and collaborates with the Quality Improvement and Performance Committee to maintain effective QC/QA programs, identify failures, implement and document remedial actions, and ensure patient test results are reported only when systems are functioning properly.
- Supports clinic operations by maintaining supplies and educational resources, preparing reports, working within budgetary guidelines, addressing client complaints and inquiries, and coordinating building maintenance needs, vendors, receipts, invoices and related documentation.
- Collaborates with Charity Referral on provider-generated specialty referrals and communicates across the organization to support coordinated care and improved patient outcomes.
- Maintains the clinic in a clean and orderly manner, supports quality assurance checks and performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory or Leadership Responsibilities
Provides supervision, coaching, competency oversight, education and delegation for nursing personnel and/or laboratory staff as assigned. Responsibilities include coordinating patient care operations, evaluating staff performance and competencies, mentoring nursing personnel, supporting professional development, and ensuring delegated clinical and testing responsibilities are performed safely and accurately.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program required.
- Licenses/Certifications: Current license as a Registered Nurse by the State of Texas required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. ACLS/PALS preferred.
- Experience: Three (3) years of nursing experience in a hospital or clinical setting required. Two (2) years of supervisory experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
- ACLS/PALS certification preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish proficiency preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Clinical nursing assessment and triage; patient care coordination; emergency response; medication and treatment administration; nursing supervision and delegation; staff competency assessment and development; infection control and safety compliance; quality control and quality assurance; laboratory testing oversight; patient and family education; policy and procedure implementation; problem-solving, communication, leadership and sound clinical judgment.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and medical documents. Fluent in English required; bilingual Spanish preferred.
Technology and Tools
Working knowledge of the Internet, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and electronic health record applications.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Medical office environment with direct contact with patients and clients.
- Requires bending, stooping, twisting, turning, walking, climbing step stools, sitting and standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and maneuver 25 pounds.
