**Job Title:** Traffic Control Technician

**Location:** Colorado (various sites statewide; may include Front Range, mountain, or rural work zones)

**Job Summary**

The Traffic Control Technician is responsible for the safe and effective setup, maintenance, and removal of temporary traffic control devices and work zones on Colorado roadways. This position supports construction, maintenance, utility, and emergency operations by implementing traffic control plans in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) standards, and applicable state and local regulations. The role prioritizes the safety of workers, the traveling public, pedestrians, and cyclists while ensuring efficient traffic flow through and around work areas.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**

- Set up, maintain, monitor, and dismantle temporary traffic control devices, including signs, cones, barricades, drums, channelizing devices, arrow boards, variable message boards, and Truck-Mounted Attenuators (TMAs).

- Implement approved Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) for lane closures, detours, flagging operations, and other work-zone configurations.

- Perform flagging duties as needed, directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic using proper signals, paddles, and techniques in compliance with CDOT and MUTCD standards.

- Transport, load, unload, and stage traffic control materials and equipment to and from job sites using company vehicles.

- Conduct regular inspections of work zones to ensure devices remain in proper condition, alignment, and reflectivity; make adjustments as conditions change.

- Maintain accurate daily records, including device inventories, setup/tear-down logs, incident reports, and any traffic control violations observed.

- Communicate effectively with supervisors, crew members, contractors, law enforcement, and the public regarding work-zone status and safety.

- Follow all safety protocols, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and promote a strong safety culture.

- Assist with inventory management, equipment maintenance, and basic repairs of traffic control devices.

- Respond to emergency or after-hours call-outs for traffic control support as required.

- Perform other related duties as assigned.

**Minimum Qualifications**

- High school diploma or GED.

- Minimum age of 18 years (required for Colorado Flagger certification).

- Valid Colorado driver’s license with a clean driving record (Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B preferred or required by some employers).

- Ability to obtain and maintain a current Colorado Flagger Certification (CDOT-approved training entity) within a specified period after hire (typically required before performing flagging duties).

- Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, the MUTCD (especially Part 6 – Temporary Traffic Control) and Colorado-specific standards.

- Physical ability to lift, carry, and place traffic control devices weighing up to 50 lbs repeatedly; stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.

- Ability to pass pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check, and drug screening (DOT-compliant where applicable).

**Preferred Qualifications**

- Current ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) or equivalent Traffic Control Technician (TCT) certification.

- Prior experience (6 months to 2+ years) in traffic control, construction, road maintenance, or related field work.

- Experience operating or working around TMAs, arrow boards, and variable message signs.

- Familiarity with Colorado mountain or high-altitude work zones and related safety considerations.

- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus in many Colorado locations.

- Strong commitment to safety and situational awareness in high-traffic environments.

- Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans, maps, and basic construction documents.

- Clear verbal communication skills for directing traffic and coordinating with crews.

- Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment checks and minor maintenance.

- Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, early mornings, and in adverse weather (heat, cold, snow, rain, wind).

**Working Conditions**

Work is primarily performed outdoors in active roadway environments with exposure to moving traffic, construction equipment, noise, dust, fumes, and variable weather conditions common to Colorado (including high-altitude and mountain settings). The position requires standing or walking for long periods, frequent lifting, and the ability to respond quickly to changing site conditions. Travel to multiple job sites within a region or statewide may be required.

**Certifications & Compliance Notes (Colorado-Specific)**

- Colorado law (C.R.S. 43-5-308) requires flaggers to be at least 18 years old and certified through a CDOT-authorized training entity. Certifications are typically valid for two years.

- For supervisory-level roles or certain CDOT contracts, progression to Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification (via ATSSA, Colorado Contractors Association, or equivalent) is often expected or required.

- Employers frequently require or prefer ATSSA Traffic Control Technician (TCT) credentials in addition to the state Flagger card.
