Job Description

Description:

This is not a traditional security supervisor position.

As the Security Supervisor, you'll lead a team responsible for helping create safe, respectful, and supportive environments across

VOA shelters, housing programs, and service locations. Success in this role requires more than overseeing security operations. It requires leadership, relationship-building, critical thinking, and a commitment to finding solutions that support both safety and the mission.

We're looking for a leader who can develop employees, build team culture, and help staff navigate complex situations involving individuals experiencing homelessness, behavioral health challenges, substance use, or crisis.

You'll work closely with program leadership, community partners, residents, and neighbors to ensure our facilities remain safe, welcoming, and well-supported.

Requirements: What Makes This Role Different

Our Security Team is part of the larger support system, not separate from it.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and mentor Security Specialists through coaching, training, and professional development
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Support the safety of clients, staff, visitors, properties, and surrounding neighborhoods
  • Partner with shelter, housing, and behavioral health teams to address challenges proactively
  • Help identify participants who may benefit from additional support services
  • Respond to operational challenges with a solutions-focused mindset
  • Collaborate with neighbors and community partners to address concerns and build positive relationships
  • Ensure security practices align with VOA's mission, values, and participant-centered approach

This role is ideal for someone who believes strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving create safer communities than enforcement alone.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise, coach, and develop Security Specialists
  • Conduct regular one-on-one coaching and performance conversations
  • Facilitate team meetings, trainings, and professional development activities
  • Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training of new staff
  • Foster accountability, teamwork, and employee growth
Operations & Safety
  • Oversee daily Security Department operations across VOA programs
  • Manage staffing schedules and ensure adequate shift coverage
  • Review incident and shift reports for quality, accuracy, and follow-up needs
  • Support staff responding to safety concerns, critical incidents, and crisis situations
  • Monitor security procedures and identify opportunities for improvement
Collaboration & Community Engagement
  • Build positive working relationships with residents, clients, staff, community partners, and neighbors
  • Partner with VOA programs to support housing stability and participant success
  • Assist with security planning for high-risk situations and after-hours needs
  • Support facility issues, operational concerns, and special projects as assigned
Who We're Looking For

This role is a strong fit for someone who:

  • Is a leader first and a supervisor second
  • Enjoys coaching and helping employees grow
  • Naturally looks for solutions rather than obstacles
  • Communicates calmly and effectively during difficult situations
  • Can balance accountability with compassion
  • Understands the importance of safety, dignity, and respect
  • Thrives in fast-paced environments where every day is different

Preferred experience includes:

  • Security, safety, or operations leadership
  • Homeless services, housing programs, behavioral health, or social services
  • Motivational Interviewing, de-escalation, or crisis response
  • Harm Reduction and Housing First approaches
  • Working with diverse and vulnerable populations
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years of security, safety, or related experience
  • Supervisory, leadership, or team development experience preferred
  • Valid Driver's License and auto insurance
  • Ability to pass required background checks
  • Must be at least 21 years old
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive compensation
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance (approximately $12,000-$15,000 annual value)
  • Employer-paid life insurance and long-term disability (approximately $1,500-$2,500 annual value)
  • Generous PTO, including vacation and sick leave
  • 8 paid holidays plus up to 5 floating holidays
  • 403(b) retirement plan
  • PSLF-eligible employer
  • Ongoing training and leadership development
  • Free electric vehicle charging at our main location
