Position Overview

The Hotel Controller oversees and manages the hotel's financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, auditing, reporting, internal controls, and financial analysis. This leadership role ensures accuracy and integrity of financial data, supports strategic decision-making, and partners closely with the General Manager, Corporate Finance, and department leaders to drive financial performance and operational efficiency within a full-service hotel environment.

What You'll Do

Financial Leadership & Management

  • Lead the hotel's Finance/Accounting Department including accounts payable, accounts receivable, income audit, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Serve as the primary financial advisor to hotel leadership, providing guidance on budgets, forecasts, and financial strategy.
  • Support the General Manager and Executive Committee with financial insights and decision-making tools.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, GAAP standards, and internal control requirements.

Accounting Operations & Reporting

  • Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, daily/weekly reports, and monthly performance packages.
  • Review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Maintain integrity of financial systems and reporting tools.

Internal Controls, Compliance & Audit

  • Implement and monitor strong internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate accounting policies, brand standards, and state/federal regulations.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors during financial reviews.
  • Identify process gaps and implement corrective actions.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting cycles for all hotel departments.
  • Analyze variances between actual and budgeted results and provide insight on performance trends.
  • Support department leaders in understanding financial data and achieving financial targets.
  • Provide labor analysis, cost control recommendations, and operational improvement strategies.

Cash, Purchasing & Revenue Controls

  • Oversee cash handling procedures, bank accounts, and internal cash audits.
  • Review purchasing practices, inventory controls, and vendor contracts for accuracy and efficiency.
  • Support revenue management with reporting, room statistics, and performance metrics.
  • Ensure proper handling of taxes, service charges, and financial compliance requirements.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, train, mentor, and supervise the accounting team.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development.
  • Ensure team members follow proper financial procedures and service standards.
  • Foster a culture of accuracy, efficiency, and accountability.

Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Work closely with Operations, Rooms, Food & Beverage, Engineering, HR, and Sales to support overall hotel performance.
  • Support departmental decision-making through financial insights and operational partnerships.
  • Assist with capital planning, project budgeting, and ROI evaluations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in Executive Committee meetings and support hotel-wide initiatives.
  • Support emergency response procedures and compliance reviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support hotel financial success.
  • Maintain reliable and consistent attendance as an essential function of the role.

What You'll Bring

Required Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Previous hotel finance or accounting leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and audit processes preferred.
  • Experience leading or supervising accounting teams preferred.
  • Hospitality, accounting, or business administration coursework preferred.
  • Experience with PMS, POS, and accounting software preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong financial and analytical skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret financial statements and provide actionable insights.
  • Strong leadership and communication abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and hotel financial systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional integrity.
