Working Title:
Overnight Student Safety & Operations Coordinator

Position Summary:
Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Residence Life and Student Housing at the University of New Mexico and the supervision of the Senior Marketing Representative, the Overnight Student Safety & Operations Coordinator is a professional who supports students within Residence Life and Student Housing (RLSH).

The Overnight Student Safety & Operations Coordinator serves as the primary contact for residence hall safety, student support, and operational continuity during overnight hours. This role provides real-time supervision of student staff, ensures compliance with departmental protocols, and supports incident response, facilities coordination, and administrative operations.

This overnight position primarily includes late-night, weekend, and holiday shifts within the main residential communities on campus, with one consistent weekly shift at the Lobo Rainforest Building. The coordinator also helps connect overnight operations with daytime staff through clear communication, consistent policy enforcement, and proactive identification of trends affecting student safety and residential communities.

The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, and committed to student development, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and foster an inclusive, engaging residential experience within a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

I. Position Responsibilities:

A. Incident Response & Real-Time Support
  1. Serve as the primary overnight point of contact for the Student Safety team
  2. Ensure staff follow established protocols during incidents and emergencies
  3. Support the Professional Staff On-Call during crisis response
  4. Monitor and identify trends in overnight incidents, including repeat behaviors, locations, and timing


B. Incident Report Review & Quality Control
  1. Conduct first-level review of overnight incident reports
  2. Ensure reports are complete, policy-aligned, and professionally written
  3. Flag urgent or high-priority incidents for follow-up
  4. Provide timely feedback to Student Safety staff and assist with After Action Reviews


C. Facilities & Operations Coordination
  1. Triage maintenance and safety concerns, contacting emergency maintenance, custodial, or locksmith services as needed
  2. Submit and verify work orders with accurate documentation
  3. Monitor recurring facility and safety issues, including locks, lighting, and hazards
  4. Ensure building walkthroughs are completed, and safety systems remain secure and operational


D. Safety & Risk Mitigation Audits
  1. Conduct proactive safety inspections of residence halls and campus facilities
  2. Identify unsecured access points, propped doors, and other high-risk conditions
  3. Track recurring concerns and recommend operational or policy improvements
  4. Review potential camera coverage gaps and recurring policy violations


E. Student Safety Staff Supervision
  1. Supervise and lead the overnight Student Safety team
  2. Provide real-time coaching, guidance, and accountability during shifts and incidents
  3. Reinforce expectations related to professionalism, customer service, and response procedures
  4. Support staff development through ongoing mentorship and feedback


F. Scheduling & Staffing Coordination
  1. Develop and manage overnight and extended coverage schedules
  2. Ensure appropriate staffing coverage across all assigned areas
  3. Balance staffing needs, employee availability, and equitable shift assignments
  4. Address last-minute staffing changes and make real-time coverage adjustments as needed


II. Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Ability to train, mentor, and supervise student staff
  2. Knowledge of residence life policies, student conduct processes, and crisis response procedures
  3. Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations
  4. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including incident documentation
  5. Leadership, conflict resolution, and accountability management skills
  6. Strong organizational, time management, and scheduling abilities
  7. Attention to detail in report review, trend analysis, and operational oversight
  8. Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective during emergencies
  9. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision during overnight hours


III. Work Environment Expectations
  1. Non-live-in, hourly position
  2. Frequent interaction with students, staff, and campus partners in a fast-paced residential environment


IV. Term of Appointment/Reappointment
  1. This position is funded for a two-year term beginning on the employee's start date and extending through 2028, in accordance with UBPPM #3200, Employee Classifications. Continuation beyond the initial term is contingent upon departmental operational needs. Approved extensions beyond the two-year period will transition to a one-year appointment structure.

  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the USUNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.


Additional Requirements: An overnight position that will require weekend hours.
