Senior Director Software Engineering

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Director Software Engineering based in United States.

The Senior Director Software Engineering will lead a multi-team technology organization responsible for delivering complex software solutions within a healthcare data and payments environment.
This senior leadership role combines organizational leadership, technical strategy, operational excellence, and modern engineering transformation.
You will champion an AI-native approach to software development, embedding intelligent tools, automation, and human-guided AI workflows throughout the engineering lifecycle.
Working closely with Product, Data, IT, Security, Finance, Operations, and business leaders, you will translate strategic priorities into scalable and measurable technology outcomes.
You will provide architectural and technical oversight while strengthening engineering standards, DevOps practices, reliability, security, and delivery performance.
The role also carries significant responsibility for developing distributed engineering teams, optimizing resources, and building a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Accountabilities
  • Build, lead, and develop a multi-team engineering organization with clear objectives, outcome-based metrics, strong accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Champion AI-native software delivery by integrating AI tools, automation, intelligent engineering workflows, and appropriate human oversight throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Establish and advance engineering practices that improve development velocity, software quality, maintainability, security, and overall engineering effectiveness.
  • Align engineering teams with enterprise architecture, technology governance, shared standards, and technical best practices to promote consistency and high-quality delivery.
  • Provide technical and architectural oversight for complex software initiatives, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, reliable, maintainable, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Direct roadmap execution while managing budgets, timelines, performance measures, organizational priorities, and resource allocation across the engineering function.
  • Lead managers and engineering teams across geographically distributed environments, influencing organizational structure and aligning resources to business goals.
  • Improve delivery throughput and resource utilization through streamlined processes, automation, DevOps practices, and AI-enabled engineering tools without compromising quality.
  • Partner with Product, Operations, Data, Finance, Security, Program Management, IT, and business stakeholders to understand strategic priorities and translate them into actionable engineering plans.
  • Drive modernization of development, testing, deployment, and operational practices through automated testing, TDD, CI/CD, DevOps, and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Strengthen software reliability and operational performance through effective monitoring, telemetry, incident response, and engineering processes.
  • Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain high-performing engineering talent while fostering growth, innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Serve as a senior technology leader and trusted advisor to stakeholders, influencing decisions and promoting engineering best practices and operational excellence.
  • Establish and execute short- and long-term objectives while monitoring progress against organizational and business outcomes.
  • Complete assigned strategic initiatives, special projects, and other responsibilities as required.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including at least 6 years leading engineering teams as a people manager.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Extensive experience designing and delivering complex enterprise software systems using technologies such as Java, React or Angular, microservices, relational and NoSQL databases, and cloud platforms.
  • Recent hands-on technical experience and a strong understanding of modern AI-enabled engineering practices.
  • Proven success managing multiple engineering teams and managers within complex, distributed, or global software development organizations.
  • Strong knowledge of Lean, iterative, and flow-based delivery methodologies, with an emphasis on quality, continuous improvement, and predictable execution.
  • Demonstrated experience advancing engineering practices through automated testing, Test-Driven Development, Continuous Integration, and Continuous Delivery.
  • Solid understanding of software operations and DevOps, including reliability engineering, monitoring, telemetry, and incident response.
  • Experience leading technology organizations through transformation, modernization, automation, and adoption of emerging engineering practices.
  • Strong strategic thinking and execution skills, with the ability to establish priorities and deliver short- and long-term objectives across multiple teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and technical judgment in complex environments.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate sophisticated technical concepts for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in healthcare or another highly regulated industry, particularly environments involving compliance, security, privacy, and sensitive data, is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, maintain focus, and make timely decisions in a high-performance environment.
  • Ability to maintain a dedicated, secure remote work environment with reliable high-speed internet connectivity.

  • Base compensation range of $175,000–$217,000 per year, with individual offers determined by experience, education, skills, certifications, and other business considerations.
