Job Overview:
The Mechanical Engineer I provides technical and engineering assistance to the Sales Engineering team in developing proposals, reviewing customer specifications, preparing technical documentation, and supporting project execution. This entry-level role serves as a bridge between engineering, sales, manufacturing, and customers to ensure proposed solutions meet technical requirements, quality standards, and business objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Sales Engineering Support
- Assist Sales Engineers in reviewing customer inquiries, specifications, drawings, and technical requirements.
- Prepare preliminary equipment selections, sizing calculations, and technical evaluations.
- Support the development of quotations, proposals, and bid packages.
- Generate bills of materials (BOMs), equipment lists, and cost estimates.
- Research customer requirements, industry standards, and applicable specifications.
- Help identify technical risks and recommend practical engineering solutions.
Engineering & Design Support
- Create and revise engineering drawings, layouts, and technical documentation using CAD software.
- Perform basic mechanical calculations and analyses to support equipment selection and design validation.
- Review project documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
- Assist in maintaining engineering databases, standard drawings, and product documentation.
- Support engineering change requests and document revisions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, and project management teams to ensure proposal accuracy and feasibility.
- Assist in resolving technical questions from customers and internal stakeholders.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings and design reviews as assigned.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes and sales support activities.
Customer and Technical Support
- Provide technical support during the quotation and order fulfillment process.
- Assist with customer submittals, technical reports, and documentation packages.
- Support product presentations and demonstrations when required.
- Respond to customer inquiries under the guidance of senior engineers and sales personnel.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution.
- 0–2 years of engineering experience (internship or co-op experience preferred).
- Basic understanding of mechanical design principles and engineering calculations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial equipment, valves, gates, actuators, pumps, or water/wastewater systems.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and engineering standards.
- Exposure to ERP systems and BOM management.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain.
Work Environment:
- Primarily office-based with occasional visits to manufacturing facilities, customer locations, and project sites.
- Collaborative environment working closely with Sales Engineers, Project Managers, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
- Ability to occasionally visit manufacturing facilities and project sites.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds when required.
