Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Manages resources and delegates as appropriate to optimize achievement of unit scope and department objectives. Assists in the operations management of the unit. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork within and across shifts. Supports and encourages the professional development of department staff. Ensures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a collaborative relationship between medical staff and hospital staff to ensure that patient needs are met related to equipment, supplies and competent staff available to deliver personalized care. Provides direct patient care in department.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Takes on a leadership role in modeling the mission, beliefs, and behaviors of the Medical Center; promotes and models highly effective interpersonal relationships.

3. *Assists in concurrent and retrospective resolution of patient, family, and/or physician concerns and complaints.

4. Utilizes the findings from quality improvement efforts (including HCAHPS/NRC and physician partnership survey scores) to enhance patient care, customer satisfaction (physicians and patients/families) and cost-effectiveness of services.

5. Assists with unit schedule and timecard approval.

6. Provides input and assists in performing staff evaluations.

7. Participates in interview process and provides feedback.

8. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by downsizing or upsizing staffing in a budget conscious manner that ensures the maintenance of safe patient care.

9. Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to ensure appropriate equipment function, equipment availability and efficient supply usage and charging; maintains a supply and equipment inventory that meets patient care needs.

10. *Ensures staff competence while emphasizing staff retention strategies.

11. *Ensures that existing policies and procedures are adhered to during daily interactions with staff; facilitates patient admissions, discharges and transfers within service line.

12. *Provides education for the patient and family to meet identified patient needs according to their needs, abilities, preferences and readiness to learn.

13. *Documents patient care and related information according to Bryan Medical – GIRMC procedures for documentation.

14. *Responsible for promoting patient and staff safety, providing accurate and clear communication, delegating, and serving as a resource and role model to colleagues, students and other care providers.

15. *Clearly defines, delegates and ensures completion of assignments to be accomplished throughout the shift; provides feedback in a timely manner to staff.

16. *Supports the Nurse Manager with communicating and implementing unit/area changes.

17. *Supports the preceptor program, new employee orientation, and student programs; communicates education and/or competency needs of staff to the Nurse Manager.

18. *Keeps the Nurse Manager informed of day-to-day operational needs/issues.

19. * Coaches and mediates staff behavior as needed and communicates with the Nurse Manager if a colleague fails to respond to proper guidance or adhere to standards expected for quality care.

20. *Takes patient care assignments or charge role during volume or acuity changes or during increased staffing demand. This may encompass up to 65% of normal weekly hours.

21. *Assists Nurse Manager regarding capital budget needs.

22. *Assists with record/billing audits related to correct charges.

23. *Coordinates appropriate vendor support.

24. Evaluates clinical outcomes prior to discharge from current level of care to next level of care; reports and acts on any untoward outcomes observed.

25. *Assists in detecting clinical outdates on equipment, drugs and supplies; acts to correct any deficiencies found.

26. *Presents equipment requests, supplies and capital items to Nurse Manager and Value Analysis team as appropriate.

27. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

28. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

29. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient’s growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

4. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

6. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

7. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

8. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

9. Ability to manage change and work within an intense work environment.

10. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act required. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and certification in specialty preferred. Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in the department or unit required.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare

professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
