The City of Fullerton is in search of skilled and dependable Water Lead Workers to join our Public Works team. In this important role, you’ll work hands-on in maintaining and repairing the City’s water system — and lead a crew to get the job done safely and efficiently.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading a crew on water maintenance, construction, and repairs
  • Oversee water meter installation, repair, and testing
  • Train and schedule team members, inspect job sites
  • Responding to service requests and questions from the public
  • Using tools, vehicles, and software to complete and track work
  • Ordering and managing parts, tools, and equipment
  • Supporting vendors and reviewing new tools or devices


What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in water/sewer construction, maintenance, repair, or treatment
  • Education: Coursework, training, and certifications related to water systems, water distribution, water treatment, or utility maintenance
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and technical skills; ability to work safely and independently
  • Knowledge: Familiar with water system tools, repair methods, and safety practices

The Position:
Under general supervision performs a variety of both skilled and general duties involved in the maintenance, repair and construction of City water and sewer system components and the maintenance and repair of water meters; leads a crew in the maintenance, repair and construction of City water and sewer system components and the maintenance and repair of water meters and performs related work as required.

There are currently three vacancies; one in each division, Distribution, Metering, and Production. The list established for this recruitment is good for one year and will be used to fill future vacancies in the Distribution, Metering, and Production divisions as needed.





Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is considered qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications is:

Graduation from high school.
AND
Three years of increasingly responsible experience within the water division of a municipality or special district, to include water facility maintenance or construction and repair.


Special Requirements:

Water Distribution/Metering:
  • A valid D3 Water Distribution Operator Certification. The certification is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
  • A valid Class A California Driver's License* and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this position.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate City needs, which includes overtime and emergency call-back.
Water Production:
  • A valid D3 Water Distribution Operator Certification and a valid T2 Water Treatment Operator Certification. The certifications are required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
  • A valid Class C California Driver's License and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this position. A Class A California Driver's License* is preferred, but not required.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate City needs, which includes overtime and emergency call-back.
*Employees in this position who possess a Class A California Driver's License and enroll in the U.S. Department of Transportation program receive an additional $50 per pay period. The position does not have to require a Class A to receive this increment pay.

Physical Tasks and Working Conditions Include the Following:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. When work is performed outdoors, there is full exposure to the elements. An incumbent performs physical labor requiring physical strength and endurance and drives a vehicle on City business. An incumbent may work in confined spaces, under damp conditions and crouch, sit, stand, walk on slippery and/or uneven surfaces, bend, crawl, kneel, pull, reach, push, twist, climb ladders and sloping surfaces and grasp, drag, lift and carry items weighing 75 pounds or less. Incumbents may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, sewage, paint, dust, grease/oil, fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards, vehicular traffic, vibration and noise and must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, sense of smell, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

Assessment Process:
Applicants must provide specific and complete details about their qualifications. Based on the information provided in the application and other required materials, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include a written exam, performance test, oral interview, and/or other assessment methods.

The City reserves the right to revise any portion of the examination process. Candidates will be notified of any changes before the related examination step.

Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process for this recruitment will be placed on an eligible list, which will remain in effect for at least one year or until an insufficient number of candidates remain on the list.

Current City of Fullerton employees may be given preference during the testing and/or selection process.

Appointment:
Employment offers are conditional upon the successful completion of a background check. The background check will include fingerprinting, verified by the State of California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Certain positions may require a more extensive background check and/or a medical examination conducted by the City’s designated physician at the City’s expense. Medical examinations assess an individual’s ability to meet the physical requirements of the position. Additionally, all new hires and employees appointed to safety-sensitive classifications must undergo a drug screening.

An appointee will serve a 12-month probationary period. Regular City employees promoted to this position will serve a 6-month probationary period, which includes possession of or obtaining required water certifications before completion of the probationary period.
