Public Utilities – Water Services team has an immediate opening for an Equipment Operator I.

The City of Chesapeake Public Utilities – Water Services team is seeking a motivated, hands-on individual to join our crew as an Equipment Operator I. What You’ll Do:
  • Install new water services, including tapping water mains and boring under roadways
  • Repair, upgrade, and abandon existing water service lines
  • Replace and upgrade water meter boxes
  • Locate underground utilities
  • Restore work sites, including soil, asphalt, and concrete surfaces
  • Perform general construction, maintenance, and manual labor assignments

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires completion of 10th grade in high school. High school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
Depending upon department requirements, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire, is also required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.


Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training is preferred.
Basic knowledge of pipe repair techniques and maintenance of water service lines is a plus!

Selected candidates will be eligible for a $3,000 sign-on bonus. In addition, qualified candidates are eligible for a $4,000 annual CDL stipend and career advancement through participation in the Career Progression program.
