About This Position
Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Vice President/Medical Director, The Director will have the following responsibilities:
- Hire, schedule, manage, discipline and terminate departmental employees including Physician and NP/PA Hospitalists according to hospital policies;
- Establish program goals and objectives in accordance with hospital administration, including productivity and clinical measures;
- Assure quality of care and business activities, including thoroughness, timeliness and accuracy of charting and reporting;
- Monitor/maintain departmental statistics and periodically report this data to hospital administration.
- Investigate complaints using standard hospital practices and provide prompt follow-up and corrective action;
- Ensure compliance with regulatory authorities (JC , CMS, DOH, etc.) and Hospital policies, pathways, protocols and standards;
- Participate on hospital committees as requested.
- Assure quality of care for hospital employed Hospitalist physician and advance practice providers, by monitoring adherence to quality indicators.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Monitor performance of departmental employees and provide comprehensive and timely feedback.
- Monitor departmental activities and performance and report same to Hospital Administration.
- Establish and manage departmental budget.
- Fulfill responsibilities of hospitalist including:
- Coordinates the care (evaluation, treatment, admission, and discharge) of patients who are admitted into the Adult Internal Medicine Hospitalist Program.
- Thoroughly, and with adequate frequency, communicates with patient, appropriate family members, patient’s private physician, specialty consulting physicians, and hospital staff regarding the status of the admitted patient.
- Provides education for staff and patients / family with whom the Hospitalist interacts.
- Supervises physician extenders (NPs & PAs).
- Institutes immediate and appropriate intervention in life or disability-threatening emergencies.
- Responds to requests for medical assistance throughout the hospital.
- Documents evaluation of and treatment given to all patients. Provides each patient with discharge instructions, both oral and written. Gives referring physician verbal and written report upon discharge of patient.
- Works assigned shifts and when on-shift does not leave the Hospital Campus. Attends all relevant professional meetings scheduled for the Department.
Participates in chart review and organized activities to reduce length of stay and improve quality outcomes.
- Participates in institutional initiatives such as disaster planning and response, environment of care / safety, risk management, etc.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Medical Degree (MD or DO) with Residency in Internal Medicine and a valid NYS Medical License.
- Valid ACLS Certification.
- Compliance with CME Requirements (Hospital, Regional, State, and Federal)
- Board Certified in Internal Medicine

Physical/Mental Demands/Requirements & Work Environment
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Must be able to move about the hospital, or remain stationary for extended periods of time
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, have legible hand writing
- Must have sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform all the procedures, techniques and skills listed in the delineation of privileges.
- Ability to position self to assess and care for patients, perform required procedures
- The person in this position frequently communicates with patients, must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
