The Environmental Construction Manager will primarily be responsible for overseeing and coordinating daily environmental compliance activities and a team of Environmental Monitors during construction of energy development projects.
The Environmental Construction Manager will provide daily oversight of onsite Environmental Monitors, project management support, review of all reporting deliverables, coordination of required surveys, as well as liaison with construction personnel, regulators, and other project stakeholders. The Environmental Construction Manager will be responsible for maintaining compliance with the Environmental Management System, as well as applicable permits and approvals. This role is responsible for management and performance of staff on the Environment team and includes, but is not limited to, project set-up, estimating, project execution, scheduling, financial management, people development and relationship management. The suitable candidate will have the ability to inspire, develop and lead talent to meet and exceed established goals that drive the business performance in an area of responsibility.
The Environmental Construction Manager role is expected to complete field inspections in remote workplace locations. This role requires traveling 25–50% of the time to remote field locations, often involving camp-style accommodations. Candidates should be comfortable working in rugged environments and adapting to varying site conditions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee and coordinate daily environmental compliance activities, including but not limited to environmental construction monitoring, environmental surveys, water crossing installations, wildlife and amphibian sweep programs during the construction of energy projects.
- Complete onsite environmental monitoring and oversight in the field (25-50% remote field work expected).
- Ensure implementation of mitigation measures from Environmental Management System, Environmental Assessment, Environmental Protection Plan, permit conditions, and best management practices.
- Provide recommendations and corrective actions related to the implementation of Erosion and Sediment Control measures.
- Prepare and review field reports for consistency and accuracy.
- Have accountability for completion of required reporting during compliance monitoring and setting expectations and follow up with other team members.
- Develop and implement corrective actions and mitigation measures for any identified environmental issues or hazards.
- Support Canacre’s commitment to safety by participating in safety meetings, following safety policies, and being an advocate for safe work practices in the field.
- Serve as the environmental lead for the construction team.
- Act as a resource to construction personnel to explain environmental regulations and how they are applied in the field.
- Act as a point of contact for the Client and Construction Contractor(s), as well as regulatory agencies.
- Coordinate daily with construction team to discuss current and upcoming construction activities, as well as upcoming constraints and potential areas of concern.
- Prepare environmental weekly, daily, and monthly reports throughout project.
- Ongoing input into Environmental Management System tracking table and environmental incidents tracking.
- Project management of environmental projects, including management of budget, scope, schedule, risk, subcontractors, and invoicing.
- Support proposal development, when required.
- Support the preparation of environmental permits, when required.
- Perform other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated experience in daily management of construction monitoring personnel.
- Experience related to transmission line and renewable energy construction would be an asset.
- Experienced leading field programs and coordinating with various field teams.
- Engaged in life-long learning to maintain knowledge of contemporary issues in both the environmental regulatory field and the energy industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in federal, provincial, and local permitting and regulations that concern the management of natural resources in the energy sector.
- Wildlife experience working in Canada (i.e., nest sweeps or avian surveys) would be considered an asset.
- Experience and knowledge related to other biophysical disciplines, such as wetlands, vegetation, aquatics, etc.
- Designation or certification related to erosion and sediment control, such as CPESC, CESSWI, etc., would be an asset.
- Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills.
- Certification by a professional society or a state regulatory board in the discipline of practice is preferred.
