Universal Stainless, headquartered in Bridgeville, PA, produces semi-finished and finished specialty steel long products and plate including nickel alloy, stainless steel, tool steel and aircraft quality low alloy steels. The Melt Shop Manager will manage all Primary Melting and Remelting operations at the North Jacksin facility to ensure the safe and
effective coordination of operations and maintenance activity while ensuring the highest quality standards.
Specific Responsibilities:
Specific primary responsibilities are defined by the following, but those listed are not all-inclusive:
- Lead Melt Shop Foreman, Remelt Foreman and all supervisory and support staff and fulfill resources as necessary.
- Manage, lead and motivate, supervisors and employees in your area of responsibility.
- Develop and work to budgets to achieve cost management goals and initiate or participate in cost reduction and/or profit improvement programs.
- Develop short-term & long-term goals, for the Production, Safety, Quality and Continuous Improvement success of the Melt Shop, Remelt and Grinding areas.
- Ensure compliance with Safety & Health, Environmental and Quality Policies.
- Ensure adherence to standardized processes and practices, including aerospace manufacturing requirements.
- Plan and coordinate all operations throughout the melt shop including raw materials receipt, maintenance and refractory needs
- Work closely with purchasing to balance cost and quality for procured raw materials and consumables, including scrap, electrodes and refractory.
- Control and improve process consistency, productivity, cost and equipment effectiveness.
- Establish and monitor adherence to department budget on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis.
- Make recommendations to plants’ Capital Expenditure plan and lead CapEx projects as required.
- Support continuous improvement efforts by leading or supporting CI projects.
- Lead project to increase productivity by # of heats/day by maximizing asset utilization.
- Achieve production standards, including quality, yields, productivity.
- Effectively communicate company and department goals, achievements, problems, solutions, practices, changes, and policies. Encourage positive communication. Enforce all company policies, rules and regulations.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to safety by reducing area record-able rate through observations and identification and robust corrective actions of injury free events and near miss incidents.
- Ability to demonstrate Strong Interpersonal, Critical Thinking, Leadership and Negotiation skills.
- Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma knowledge including statistical analysis.
- General knowledge of scrap alloys and alloyed steel.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Education and Experience Required:
- Previous Melt Experience Required.
- Experience in alloyed steels and Remelting operations (ESR and VAR) required.
- 7+ years of increasing responsibilities including supervisory experience within a unionized industrial manufacturing organization.
- 5+ years’ experience leading both hourly and salaried employees.
- Experience with EAF and AOD operations required.
- Ability and desire to manage a 24/7 manufacturing operation.
- Raw material management, refractory and/or charge mix creation experience desired.
- Demonstrated leadership in continuous improvement activities and 5S.
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field preferred.
Physical and Other Requirements:
- Ability to safely move around a heavy industrial plant environment up to 12 hours per day.
