POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of motor generators, automobiles, buses, trucks or tractors. Work involves most of the following: Diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required: replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bear­ings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. Work sometimes requires repairs without availability of assembly drawings or repair manuals. May require modification of brackets or fixtures to permit parts substitution based on knowledge of operating principles and/or modification to tailor operating characteristics to non-standard requirements.

Work will include associated cross-utilization into these and other jobs as required. May require some overtime and/or weekend work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must have demonstrated satisfactory skills and good performance as an Automotive/Generator Mechanic. Must have three years progressive experience as an Automotive/Generator Mechanic and have graduated from a two year resident course at a vocational institute or a recognized apprenticeship program or a total of six years progressive experience as an Automotive/Generator Mechanic. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Applicant selected may be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
