Program Overview

The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Specialist plays a key role in optimizing EMR use to enhance efficiency, support high-quality patient care, and ensure accurate data collection. Working collaboratively with various ENPCN Teams, this position provides expertise and guidance to ENPCN physicians, clinical staff, and ENPCN team members. Additionally, the EMR Specialist serves as an EMR subject matter expert, supporting and leveraging EMR functionality to maintain excellence in patient care and data integrity.

The role is based out of the Edmonton North Community Health Hub and involves working with physician-member clinics or ENPCN centralized staff. This role will work in collaboration with other professionals within the ENPCN’s multi-disciplinary team, physicians, clinics Managers and clinic teams.

Position

The specific responsibilities of the EMR Specialist include

  • Act as an EMR expert:
    • Complete current state assessments of EMR utilization and make recommendations for improvement.
    • Support process improvement, operational efficiency, and adherence to clinical workflows.
    • Support the standardization of documentation in the EMR.
    • Create templates, forms, or other EMR solutions to support accurate charting and data collection.
    • Understand EMR capabilities to develop new solutions and support innovation.
    • Create and activate alerts in the EMR.
    • Build queries and generate EMR reports.
  • Investigate, manage, and resolve problems related to EMR, partner with vendors when appropriate.
  • Support clinic staff and ENPCN staff with EMR best practices and build individual competencies with EMR use.
  • Support current EMR add-ons within the ENPCN and support clinics to investigate or implement new EMR products or add-ons. Build capacity in the Panel Management Assistants to leverage the EMR to enable outreach screening in clinics
  • Create standardized training documents and process guides to support onboarding of new ENPCN staff
  • Support EMR design/build for clinic Quality Improvement projects
  • Acts as a subject matter expert on the ENPCN EMR Committee
  • Develop professional, trusting relationships with all stakeholders (including PPS Team, ENPCN physicians and clinic staff, ENPCN Clinical, Administrative, and Leadership Teams).
  • Stay up to date with EMR best practices and functionality.

Report to

Manager, Clinical Services

Education

  • High School diploma, Medical Office Assistant Diploma, or other healthcare related diploma or degree required (e.g. Health Information Management Diploma, data analytics).
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.

Experience

  • 3+ years experience working in a health care environment, primary care experience is an asset.
  • Advanced experience using EMRs to customize forms or templates, develop workflows, and create queries.
  • Experience troubleshooting EMR issues and identifying solutions.
  • Advanced Health Quest and Med Access EMR experience is required. Experience with other EMRs an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional computer skills, including Microsoft 365 and Teams.
  • Experience or formal training in quality improvement is an asset.
