Position Summary

As a nationally accredited program with a strong educationalmission within The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, the Office ofthe Medical Investigator (OMI) investigates deaths occurring throughout NewMexico that are sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected, or unexplained. As aspecial program within the Department of Pathology, OMI determines the causeand manner of death and provides formal death certification.

OMI is currently looking for a RadiologicSpecialty Tech to join our team. The chosen candidate will be assistingpathologists with completion of CT scans of decedents for the day's docket. Weare looking for applicants with a strong work ethic and who are able to followcomplex instruction. Candidates must be able to work in a lab setting andfollow protocols for sanitation, infection control, and safety. The positionalso requires data entry and a high degree of attention to detail. Ourcandidate will be able to deal with graphic sights and intense smell.

The Radiologic Technologist plays acentral role in providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services that supportOMIs statewide medicolegal death investigations. The position performsradiographic examinations of decedents in accordance with establishedprotocols, ensuring images are obtained safely, accurately, and efficiently toassist Medical Investigators and forensic personnel in determining cause andmanner of death. The position works closely with OMI leadership, MedicalInvestigators, forensic staff, autopsy personnel, imaging professionals, andother healthcare and investigative partners to support the timely completion ofexaminations and documentation. The position also supports OMIs missionthrough adherence to radiation safety standards, quality assurance practices,accurate imaging documentation, equipment operation and maintenance, andprofessional handling of decedents and sensitive investigative information.

OMI is a 24/7 facility, work on holidays and weekends maybe required.

Position Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic radiographic examinations of decedents in support of medicolegal death investigations, autopsy examinations, and identification procedures.
• Obtain high-quality radiographic images in accordance with established OMI protocols, physician direction, and applicable professional standards.
• Operate fixed and portable radiographic equipment, including positioning and imaging systems used within OMI facilities and approved investigative settings.
• Select appropriate imaging techniques, positioning, exposure factors, and protocols based on the examination requested and condition of the decedent.
• Provide imaging support for cases involving trauma, gunshot wounds, fractures, foreign bodies, medical devices, unidentified decedents, and other findings requiring radiographic evaluation.
• Perform imaging that may assist with identification, injury documentation, localization of foreign objects, and evaluation of skeletal or other physical findings.
• Ensure radiographic images are properly labeled, identified, stored, and associated with the correct OMI case and decedent.
• Maintain accurate and timely imaging records and case documentation in accordance with OMI policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of medicolegal, investigative, medical, and personal information encountered during casework.
• Apply appropriate radiation safety practices, including use of shielding, controlled access, exposure minimization, and adherence to applicable radiation protection requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
• Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
• Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiographic, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning equipment/CT setting, x-ray exposure times, and safety parameters.
• Ability to calibrate and configure radiographic, ultrasound, and or CT equipment and associated facilities and devices in accordance with procedures and standards.
• Ability to safely lift, maneuver and physically manipulate patients.

Conditions of Employment

• May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
• UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
• State of New Mexico Licensure.
• Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
• Must maintain certification status.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree; at least 3 years of directly related experience which may include directly related certification or practicum training. Certification/Licensure: Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
