• Reports to: Quality Supervisor
• Location: Pittsfield, MA
• Schedule: Second shift; overtime, weekend, and schedule-change support as production requirements require
• Daily Work Direction: Second-shift wet-testing / QC technicians; this is a working crew-lead position, not a formal disciplinary supervisory position
• Experience: Two or more years of concrete testing, quality control, precast/prestressed, ready-mix, or comparable manufacturing experience preferred
• Certifications: PCI Level I and ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I required at hire or to be obtained successfully within one year of hire
The Ideal Candidate is a safety-conscious, detail-oriented working leader who takes ownership of testing, inspection, documentation, and shift communication. This person keeps the crew organized, protects product traceability, and knows when to resolve a routine issue and when to promptly elevate a quality or compliance concern.
Overview:
The Quality Crew Lead - 2nd Shift Wet Testing performs and leads second-shift wet-testing and related quality-control activities for precast and prestressed concrete production. This is a hands-on role responsible for ensuring fresh-concrete testing, sample handling, inspection support, documentation, equipment readiness, and shift-to-shift communication are completed safely, accurately, and on time in accordance with approved procedures, project requirements, and applicable industry standards.
The role provides daily work direction and training support to second-shift wet-testing / QC personnel and coordinates closely with Production, the Batch Plant, and the Quality Supervisor. The Quality Crew Lead is expected to perform the full range of assigned quality-control duties needed to support production, including testing, documentation, inspections, product traceability, equipment care, and follow-up of identified concerns. Final product disposition, formal corrective action, personnel discipline, and policy decisions remain with the Quality Supervisor or Quality Management.
Roles and Responsibilities include and are not exclusive to the following:
• Ensure all personnel are working safely, using required PPE, and following company safety procedures while performing testing, sampling, inspections, and related quality activities.
• Review daily production schedules, approved mix designs, project-specific specifications, required testing frequencies, and hold points to plan second-shift QC coverage and priorities.
• Perform and coordinate fresh-concrete testing, including slump or slump flow, air content, unit weight, concrete temperature, visual observations, and other required tests in accordance with approved procedures and project requirements.
• Cast, identify, store, protect, handle, and document concrete test specimens accurately; maintain traceability to the correct project, cast date, mix design, batch ticket, production piece, pour, and curing condition.
• Verify that test results and batch information meet approved mix requirements and project acceptance limits; promptly communicate potential deviations, unusual results, or nonconforming conditions to the Quality Supervisor and appropriate operations personnel.
• Coordinate with Production and the Batch Plant when adjustments, additional testing, sample re-pulls, troubleshooting, or temporary production holds are needed; communicate facts clearly and maintain a professional working relationship.
• Support and perform pre-pour quality activities as assigned, including verification of required documentation, mix identification, sample-board or finish requirements, forms, reinforcement, embeds, inserts, cleanliness, and other project-specific hold points within the individual’s training and authority.
• Support in-process inspections during concrete placement, consolidation, finishing, curing, and casting operations; identify workmanship or process concerns and promptly elevate conditions that could affect quality, appearance, strength, durability, or traceability.
• Support post-pour, stripping, repair, dimensional, final-inspection, release, shipping, and other quality activities as assigned; clearly document observed defects, incomplete requirements, or needed follow-up and escalate as required.
• Maintain complete, legible, and timely test records, batch-ticket references, photos, inspection forms, test logs, electronic entries, and required project documentation using company systems, tablets, and approved templates.
• Verify that testing equipment, specimen molds, scales, air meters, thermometers, curing equipment, and related tools are available, clean, maintained, calibrated as required, and used correctly; promptly report equipment damage, missing items, or calibration concerns.
• Maintain orderly, clean, secure testing areas and specimen-storage locations so samples, records, equipment, and project documentation remain protected, organized, and traceable.
• Provide hands-on direction, coaching, and training to second-shift wet-testing / QC personnel on approved testing methods, sample identification, documentation expectations, inspection practices, equipment care, and safe work habits.
• Assist with compression-strength testing, break-result documentation, curing records, temperature or maturity documentation, and related laboratory activities as assigned and within approved procedures.
• Support third-party inspectors, testing laboratories, DOT / owner representatives, and customer inspections as assigned by providing requested testing records, samples, observations, and factual status information.
• Identify and document quality, safety, documentation, equipment, staffing, and workflow concerns; address routine issues within approved procedures and promptly elevate matters that require supervisory direction or product disposition.
• Communicate complete end-of-shift status, outstanding tests, specimens, inspections, deviations, required follow-up, and production concerns to the Quality Supervisor and incoming QC personnel before leaving the shift.
• Lead by example with integrity, respect, urgency, accountability, and a customer-focused mindset; contribute to a positive quality culture and support continuous improvement of testing, inspection, documentation, and production processes.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Quality Management to support safe, compliant, efficient production and shipment of conforming precast and prestressed concrete products.
Position Requirements:
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two or more years of concrete testing, quality control, ready-mix, precast/prestressed concrete, or comparable manufacturing experience preferred.
• Prior experience leading work activities, training others, or serving as a senior technician / crew lead preferred.
• Must hold, or successfully obtain within one year of hire, PCI Level I and ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I certifications.
• Working knowledge of fresh-concrete testing, test specimen handling, concrete inspection, test documentation, approved mix designs, batch tickets, and basic concrete quality-control principles.
• Ability to read and follow shop drawings, pour schedules, mix requirements, batch tickets, test logs, written procedures, project specifications, and applicable ASTM, ACI, PCI, DOT, and owner requirements as assigned.

• Ability to work second shift and support overtime, weekend, and schedule changes when production requirements require it.
• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of concrete testing and plant quality-control work, including standing, walking, climbing stairs, working in an industrial environment, and lifting or carrying testing materials and equipment.
Preferred Attributes:
• Knowledge of precast / prestressed concrete production processes and applicable ASTM, ACI, PCI, DOT, customer, and internal quality requirements.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in accurate, complete, traceable documentation.
• Working-leadership skills that help teammates succeed while keeping the shift focused on safe, accurate, timely completion of priorities.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with Production, Batch Plant, Engineering, Project Management, Shipping / Yard, and Quality personnel.
• Self-starter with strong organization, time-management, problem-solving, and follow-through skills.
Core Competencies:
