Youth Commissioner in Hinesville, Georgia at Liberty County Board of Commissioners

The Liberty County Board of Commissioners actively invites and encourages all students in grades 9th - 11th to apply for a position with the Liberty County Youth Commission (LCYC). LCYC is a leadership and service program that empowers young people to become knowledgeable, involved, and effective advocates for children and youth issues in their communities. The program runs from August through March and is coordinated through the Administration Department. This year, we are accepting up to 25 leaders.

The application due date is 5:00 PM on August 12, 2026.

The purpose of LCYC is:

• To develop leadership skills, increase civic engagement, and strengthen communication between youth and community leaders.
• To advocate for youth-related legislation, policies, and programs.
• To provide opportunities for volunteering, community service, and hands-on involvement in local government processes.

LCYC roles & responsibilities:

• Participating in regular meetings to discuss youth issues and present recommendations to decision-makers.
• Volunteering for planning, community projects, and advocacy work.
• Representing youth perspectives in policy discussions and contributing to solutions for local youth challenges.
• Engaging in community service projects that address identified youth needs.

In short, the Youth Commission offers a volunteer leadership role where young people gain real-world experience in advocacy, community service, and civic engagement, while contributing to positive change for youth in their community.

For consideration, students must meet the following criteria:

1. Submit a completed application, ONE PAGE ESSAY, and NOMINATION STATEMENT.

• ONE PAGE ESSAY: "In your opinion, what is the most important issue facing youth today and how does it affect your generation?" Write an original, organized essay that includes an introduction, a body with supportive ideas, and a conclusion with a specific positive action you think will resolve this concern. Format: Times New Roman or Arial, font size 12, double spaced.
• NOMINATION STATEMENT: A typed letter from a teacher, counselor, principal, pastor/religious leader, or community member who has known the applicant for at least one (1) year.

1. Submit a signed PARENTAL CONSENT FORM (this form will be sent to the applicant once the application and supporting documents are successfully submitted).
2. Must be in the 9th - 11th grade during the 2026 - 2027 academic school year.
3. Must attend a school (public, private, or homeschool) within the Liberty County district.
4. Must be a Liberty County resident.
5. Be willing to attend ALL meetings of such boards and committees.
6. Be willing to participate in Liberty Count Board of Commissioners and Youth Commission sponsored service projects, programs, and special events.
