System Technician I - Senior System Technician

Position Summary

TNMP is seeking qualified candidates for a System Technician I, II, III, IV, V, or Senior System Technician position. This progression role provides opportunities for growth from entry-level journey responsibilities through senior-level leadership and technical expertise in substation operations and maintenance.

The successful candidate will inspect, test, install, maintain, and troubleshoot substation, transmission, distribution, and metering equipment while supporting the safe and reliable operation of the electric system. Placement within the progression will be based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, demonstrated competencies, and successful completion of applicable competency requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain substation electrical equipment using voltmeters, ammeters, and other electrical testing devices.
• Install, maintain, and repair substation, transmission, distribution, and metering equipment.
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance activities, including transformer and oil testing.
• Assist with or independently perform switching operations, dispatching duties, and system restoration activities as qualified.
• Survey, stake, and support new construction and system improvement projects.
• Report and document equipment changes, field modifications, and line mapping updates.
• Maintain substation facilities, buildings, and grounds through repair, painting, and upkeep activities.
• Utilize safe work practices in accordance with company policies, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in emergency response efforts and on-call rotations as required.
• Train, mentor, and guide less experienced technicians as progression level increases.
• Plan and coordinate work assignments, maintain records, and provide technical leadership at advanced progression levels.
• Supervise crews and lead field activities at the Senior System Technician level.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

System Technician I

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Three to four years of related electrical, utility, substation, construction, or maintenance experience.

System Technician II

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Four to five years of related experience.
• Completion of System Technician I competencies or equivalent experience.

System Technician III

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Five to six years of related experience.
• Completion of System Technician II competencies or equivalent experience.

System Technician IV

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Six to seven years of related experience.
• Completion of System Technician III competencies or equivalent experience.

System Technician V

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Seven or more years of related experience.
• Completion of System Technician IV competencies or equivalent experience.

Senior System Technician

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Seven to nine years of advanced substation or utility experience.
• Completion of System Technician V competencies or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated leadership, job planning, employee training, and supervisory abilities.

Preferred

• College coursework in Engineering, Electrical Technology, Power Systems, Industrial Technology, or related vocational training.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Progressive levels of proficiency are expected throughout the System Technician career path, including:

• Knowledge of electrical theory and transformer theory.
• Understanding of substation, transmission, and distribution systems.
• Knowledge of electrical testing methods and safe work practices.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
• Ability to operate power tools, test equipment, and specialized utility equipment.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to recognize, communicate, and mitigate hazardous conditions.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions.
• Ability to train and mentor others at higher progression levels.
• Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
• Ability to interact professionally with employees, customers, contractors, and community stakeholders.

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
• Must meet and maintain all Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and applicable regulatory qualifications.
• Must maintain a driving record that meets Company standards.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to climb poles, ladders, and structures.
• Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and kneeling.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and pull up to 75 pounds.

Work Environment

• Primarily field-based and outdoor work environment.
• Exposure to energized electrical equipment, construction sites, and varying weather conditions.
• Participation in emergency restoration efforts and on-call assignments required.

Compensation

Placement within the progression and corresponding pay level will be based on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competency.
