Job Title: Commercial Pipefitter
Job Classification: Full-time / Non-Exempt
Position Summary:
The Commercial Pipefitter is responsible for fabricating, installing, maintaining, and repairing high- and low-pressure piping systems, equipment, and associated mechanical components across large commercial properties and institutional campuses (such as colleges and universities). This position handles complex hydrological, steam, gas, and chemical distribution systems essential to central utility plants and large-scale facility operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
• Current Journeyman Pipefitter License or equivalent trade certification.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of pipefitting experience in a large commercial, industrial, or campus environment.
Essential Job Duties:
• Read, interpret, and work from mechanical blueprints, isometric drawings, building plans, and BIM models to plan installation layouts.
• Layout, assemble, fabricate, weld, thread, press, and braze high-pressure steam, hot/chilled water, condenser water, compressed air, and natural gas piping systems.
• Perform installations and mechanical integrations with large-scale commercial HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handling units, and pumps.
• Perform system pressure testing (hydrostatic and pneumatic) to ensure integrity, compliance, and leak-free operations before system commissioning.
• Coordinate directly with site engineers, commercial inspectors, campus facility managers, and subcontractors to schedule work, acquire permits, and ensure compliance with local codes and institutional standards.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency repair of campus-wide piping utility networks and mechanical room operations.
• Safely operate rigging equipment, pipe hoists, and aerial lifts to move and position heavy piping runs, valves, and structural supports.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Expert proficiency in cutting, threading, grooving, pressing, soldering, brazing, and welding (TIG/SMAW) various piping materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, and PVC/CPVC.
• Deep understanding of commercial HVAC hydronic systems, central utility plant operations, steam distribution, and gas piping codes.
• Knowledge of pressure-testing methodologies, valve operation, and rigging/hoisting techniques.
• Strong blueprint reading and spatial reasoning capabilities.
• Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and coordinate timelines with facility directors, project managers, and trade personnel.
• High commitment to safety standards, including OSHA regulations, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space safety, and Hot Work protocols.
• Ability to manage time, prioritize competing work orders in an active campus setting, and work independently or as part of a crew.
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required):
• Master Pipefitter / Welder certification.
• Valid ASME Pipe Welding certifications (6G position).
• EPA Universal Certification or Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Safety certification.
• Any air conditioning certifications.

Physical Demands:
• Ability to operate tablets, mobile devices, and field management software for work orders.
• Ability to read, write, speak, hear, see, think, communicate, concentrate, learn, and work.
• Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver materials and tools up to 100 lbs repeatedly during work hours.
• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and operate aerial scissor/boom lifts.
• Ability to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and work overhead for extended periods during work hours.
• Ability to work in small, confined dark spaces, mechanical tunnels, boiler rooms, crawl spaces, attics, and vaults.
• Ability to work in a wide range of temperatures (indoor utility rooms, unconditioned spaces, outdoor campus environments).
• Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
