Job Description

Finance Director

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Finance Director based in United States.

This senior finance leadership role oversees the technical integrity, compliance, and reporting of a mission-driven international nonprofit organization.
You’ll serve as the organization’s senior finance professional, ensuring accurate books, financial statements, audits, tax filings, treasury operations, and financial reporting.
The role combines hands-on technical accounting expertise with team leadership, systems development, risk management, and change management.
You’ll work across the United States, Ecuador, and Peru, providing financial oversight for international operations and grants to partner organizations.
The position offers an opportunity to strengthen internal controls, bring accounting functions in-house, and build scalable financial systems without unnecessary bureaucracy.
You’ll partner closely with executive leadership, auditors, funders, and the Board Finance Committee to turn complex financial information into clear, decision-useful insights.
This is a fully remote U.S.-based opportunity requiring regular schedule overlap with Ecuador and Peru, with occasional travel to country offices.

Accountabilities:

Accounting Management & Financial Close

  • Oversee the monthly close, account reconciliations, accruals, payroll review, and coding quality through the Finance Manager.
  • Review and approve monthly financial statements, including net asset classifications, restricted fund balances, and material accruals.
  • Own the chart of accounts and class and project structures, including the planned 2027 restructuring.
  • Maintain the methodology for allocating personnel and shared costs across program, management and general, and fundraising functions, reviewing it annually with external auditors.
  • Ensure accounting records are maintained to audit-ready standards without requiring reconstruction.

Audit, Tax & U.S. Compliance

  • Lead the annual external audit in partnership with the Chief Finance and Operations Officer, managing planning, schedules, fieldwork, auditor relationships, management responses, and recommendations.
  • Oversee preparation and review of Form 990 and related schedules, including Schedule F covering activities and grantmaking outside the United States.
  • Maintain California and multi-state compliance, including charitable registrations and required state filings.
  • Apply U.S. nonprofit accounting standards, including FASB ASC 958, contribution revenue recognition, net asset classification, and functional expense reporting.
  • Prepare audit results and management letter responses for the Board Finance Committee.

Internal Controls & Financial Policy

  • Develop and maintain the internal control framework and financial policy manual, including delegated authorities, approval thresholds, segregation of duties, travel and advances, and payment authorization.
  • Design practical controls for a distributed team operating across three countries, including appropriate compensating controls where full segregation of duties is not possible.
  • Ensure critical finance processes have documented procedures and designated backups.
  • Maintain the financial component of the organizational risk register, covering fraud, key-person, currency, partner, and liquidity risks.

Treasury & Financial Reporting

  • Manage banking, credit card, and payment platform relationships, including account structures, signatory authority, user access, and periodic access reviews.
  • Manage cash positioning across countries and currencies while maintaining appropriate liquidity.
  • Maintain a rolling 12-month cash flow forecast and monitor reserves against the organization’s reserve policy.
  • Prepare monthly leadership financial packages and quarterly Board financial packages, translating financial results into actionable analysis.
  • Promptly escalate material variances, liquidity concerns, control failures, and compliance risks.

International & Grant Finance

  • Maintain the framework governing funds re-granted to partner organizations, including appropriate counterparty screening before disbursement.
  • Determine and consistently apply appropriate accounting treatment for pass-through funds, including principal versus agent arrangements and related Form 990 reporting.
  • Oversee accounting and statutory cost obligations associated with operations in Ecuador and Peru, including payroll, benefits, and accruals.
  • Provide financial oversight of legal entities and affiliates.
  • Review complex and high-value donor financial reports before submission.

Team Leadership & Systems Transition

  • Supervise, coach, and develop the Finance Manager and Manager, Grant Finance and Budgeting across countries, languages, and time zones.
  • Manage outsourced accounting, tax, and compliance relationships, including scope, deliverables, deadlines, and technical decisions.
  • Lead the transition of accounting activities in-house as internal capacity develops, maintaining a documented transition and handover plan.
  • Strengthen financial management capabilities across the organization so budget owners can understand and effectively use their financial information.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit finance and accounting, including at least 2 years supervising staff.
  • Direct experience with U.S. 501(c)(3) accounting and reporting, either within an operating nonprofit or through auditing nonprofit clients in public accounting.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and FASB ASC 958, including net asset classification, contribution revenue recognition, and functional expense reporting.
  • Experience leading or closely supporting annual external audits.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing Form 990 filings.
  • Practical internal controls experience, with the judgment to design effective controls for lean teams.
  • Advanced Excel skills and administrator-level proficiency with QuickBooks Online or a comparable accounting system.
  • Ability to explain complex financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues, executives, auditors, and Board members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build reliable systems and documentation without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Strong analytical judgment and attention to detail, with the ability to distinguish material issues from lower-impact matters.
  • Persistence in resolving financial and operational problems at their source rather than relying on downstream corrections.
  • Experience leading distributed teams across countries, languages, and time zones.
  • Discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential and sensitive financial information.
  • Comfort working across multiple legal entities, jurisdictions, and operating environments.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Also Valuable

  • International NGO experience, particularly involving field operations, foreign grantmaking, sub-awards, or Schedule F reporting.
  • Professional working proficiency in Spanish.
  • CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • Commitment to working respectfully with Indigenous communities, partners, and allied organizations.

Benefits:

  • Annual salary of $95,000–$115,000, with placement within the range based on experience and qualifications.
  • Medical and other employee benefits provided as part of the organization’s benefits package.
  • Fully remote work within the United States.
  • Regular schedule overlap with teams in Ecuador and Peru.
  • Occasional travel to international country offices.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization focused on environmental conservation and Indigenous community partnership.
  • Full-time employee position with exempt status.
