Diesel Technician II

Department: Truck Service Point
Reports to: Shop Foreman
Effective Date: 09/08/26

Position Overview

The Diesel Truck Technician II is a mid-level technician responsible for performing intermediate repairs, diagnostics, and preventative maintenance on diesel-powered trucks and related fleet equipment. This role requires solid technical competency, the ability to work independently on most repairs, and the capability to assist lower-level technicians with training and troubleshooting.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Diagnostics & Repair
  • Perform intermediate-level diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, and emission-related issues.
  • Troubleshoot and repair:
    • Diesel engines
    • Aftertreatment systems (DPF, DOC, SCR)
    • Electrical and charging systems
    • Cooling systems
    • Brake and air systems
    • Suspension and steering components
  • Use diagnostic tools and OEM software to identify root-cause issues.
  • Perform component replacements, adjustments, and calibrations as required.
Preventative Maintenance & Inspections
  • Perform and sign off on PM A/B/C services.
  • Conduct DOT-level inspections and ensure equipment meets regulatory compliance.
  • Identify and document potential failures or safety hazards during PMs.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Accurately document all work orders, labor hours, parts used, and diagnostic findings.
  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors regarding equipment status.
  • Provide repair recommendations and improvement suggestions for recurring issues.
Safety & Shop Standards
  • Follow all company safety programs and PPE requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
  • Properly use shop equipment, lifts, and specialty tools.
Team Support & Leadership
  • Assist Diesel Technician I personnel with troubleshooting and hands-on training.
  • Provide guidance on proper repair procedures and shop best practices.
  • Support overall shop efficiency and workflow.
Skills and RequirementsRequired Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2–4 years of experience as a diesel or automotive technician.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and repair procedures.
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of a diesel or automotive technical program.
  • OEM training (e.g., Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR, Navistar) is highly desirable.
  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications (T-Series).
  • Demonstrated ability to train or mentor junior technicians.
  • CDL Class A or B.
Work Environment
  • Shop setting with exposure to noise, fumes, moving vehicles, and heavy machinery.
  • Requires physical activity including standing, kneeling, climbing, and lifting.
  • May require occasional outdoor work depending on facility setup.
Salary

Pay Range: $28.00–$36.00 per hour, depending on experience, certifications, and shift assignment.


First Shift- 9:00 - 17:00
