School Speech Aide Job Description
Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Speech Language Pathologist or Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, the School Speech Aide will perform a variety of speech therapy-related activities; assist in speech therapy services to children with speech and language disabilities; perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for SLPs or SLPAs; and do other related work as required.
Essential Functions
An individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without accommodation. The requirements listed below represent, but are not all-inclusive, of the required knowledge, skills, and/or abilities.
Some positions may require Spanish as a second language.
Responsibilities
- Assist SLP/SLPA with the presentation of speech therapy materials and in the conduct of speech therapy exercises
- Assist with technology issues, such as logging in, audio, video, and navigating software during a session
- Create and maintain a suitable learning environment for the teletherapy session.
- Provide prompts, physical support (if needed), or reinforcement tools as directed by the SLP to keep the client engaged.
- Act as a liaison between the SLP and the client, relaying information, questions, and challenges between them.
- Assist the client with scheduling and navigating any obstacles that may impact their attendance at sessions.
- Assist in the management of student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and techniques
- Assist in the preparation of a variety of speech therapy materials and learning aids
- Maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information
- Assist students with activities to facilitate oral motor development
- Maintain or assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all student records and information, adhering to regulations such as FERPA and HIPAA.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements/Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience working with students, and particularly students with disabilities, preferred
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Talents
- Knowledge of general first aid and CPR
- Familiarity with basic behavior patterns and problems of students having communicative, intellectual, or physical disabilities
- Ability to develop an understanding of materials and equipment used in the Speech and Language Pathology Program
- Knowledge of proper English usage, spelling, grammar, and math
- Ability to gain the confidence of colleagues, children, and youth assigned to Speech and Language Pathology Program
- Ability to perform a variety of general education assistance duties
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
- Knowledge of general child development behavior patterns
- Ability to effectively apply specialized training,/ experience in working with the challenges and needs of students in the program.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear
- Sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds

Salary
- $17.00-$22.00/hour
