Position Summary

The Lead CCTV Camera Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining closed-circuit television (CCTV) pipeline inspection equipment to assess the condition of sanitary sewer, storm drain, and other underground pipelines. This role leads a two-person crew, ensures inspections meet industry coding standards (e.g., NASSCO PACP), and serves as the primary point of contact for crew safety, equipment operation, and report quality on assigned job sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CCTV crawler/push camera systems, including tractor units, cable reels, lighting, and sensor packages.
  • Navigate cameras through pipelines of varying diameters and conditions, capturing clear video and accurately identifying defects, blockages, root intrusion, corrosion, and structural damage.
  • Code observations in real time using NASSCO PACP (Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program) or client-specified standards.
  • Review and finalize inspection footage, logs, and written reports for accuracy and completeness before submission to clients or engineers.
  • Lead daily crew briefings, assign tasks to the Camera Operator Assistant, and oversee on-site safety practices including traffic control, confined space protocols, and manhole entry procedures.
  • Coordinate with the Vac Truck crew when combined cleaning-and-inspection work is scheduled, sequencing tasks for efficient site turnaround.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor repairs on camera crawlers, cables, monitors, and generators; report equipment issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of footage, mileage, materials used, and site conditions.
  • Communicate professionally with municipal inspectors, property owners, and engineers on site.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate junior operators and assistants.
  • Follow all company, OSHA, and DOT safety policies, including traffic control (MUTCD/TCP), trenching/excavation awareness, and confined space entry requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3+ years of experience operating CCTV pipeline inspection equipment required; sewer/utility field experience preferred.
  • NASSCO PACP/MACP/LACP certification required or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record; CDL a plus.
  • Strong understanding of pipe materials, defect coding, and inspection reporting software (e.g., WinCan, POSM, or equivalent).
  • Confined space entry certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to read basic site maps, utility drawings, and work orders.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work around open manholes and excavation sites for extended periods.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, or occasional nights/weekends based on client scheduling needs.
