Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Finance/Accounting or equivalent in related field and at least 2 years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous grants and contracts experience preferred


Job Description

To perform financial and operational analysis activities with an intermediate functional or organizational scope.

Job Duties:
  • Creates and develops specialized reports utilizing clinical and financial data resulting in business plans, operational and/or programmatic reviews and profitability analysis.
  • Performs cost and profit analysis; identifies weak fiscal financial performance; recommends financial solutions and recommends corrective action plans.
  • Develops a system to improve the financial position of the departments in ASG III
  • Participates in fiscal activities including budget planning, analysis, and entry.
  • Monitors and reviews income and expenses related to E&G, MSRDP, Other Designated, Restricted, and Agency fund groups to ensure compliance with budgets, policies, and procedures, and donative instruments.
  • Monitors actual clinical and financial data to measure performance against budget and performs variance analysis to identify and explain any differences.
  • Responsible for monthly variance analysis and explanation process and financial reconciliation of departmental accounts.
  • Approves non-PO vouchers, requisitions, and expense reports ensuring appropriateness of expenditures and compliance with current UTMB Policies and Procedures.
  • Prepares comparative analysis reports and statements reflecting variations in expenditures and revenues.
  • Assists the Administrator and Sr. Finance Manager in establishing and attaining goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates with other UTMB departments to resolve issues and/or concerns as well as providing and receiving information.
  • Monitors trends and performance and identifies profitability improvements.
  • Prepares projections for new hires, replacement positions, and new programs.
  • Supports/manages other duties and projects as assigned by Administrator and Sr. Finance Manager
  • Develops productive relationships with UTMB personnel across campus while accomplishing institutional objectives
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Provide assistance to principal investigators in the preparation of complex grants and contract proposals including formatting of proposals, assisting in budget preparation, and utilization of reference software.
  • Assist with the preparation and analysis of financial reports, specifically those related to grant accounts by faculty member and expense category with the goals of assuring that expenses are charged appropriately, that no account is in deficit, that all employees are properly sourced, and that PIs are informed.
  • Assist with the monitoring, reviewing, and supervision of time and effort reporting and certification.
  • Assist principal investigators with annual progress reports and grant submissions.
  • Advise principal investigators regarding grant applications, deadlines, and projections for future research funds.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Possess a working knowledge and understanding, with progressive development, of financial statements and relationships, analytical techniques, operations, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, practices, and procedures
  • Progressive development of the ability to analyze/evaluate data
  • Must possess excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively work and communicate with individuals at all levels of the institution
