About This Position
Due Diligence Underwriter
Location: Houston - In Office
About the Role
Opus CMC is seeking motivated mortgage professionals to join our Due Diligence team as Underwriter Trainees. This role is designed for individuals with a strong foundation in frontline mortgage underwriting who are ready to expand their expertise into the specialized world of due diligence. Trainees will receive structured training, hands-on file review experience, and ongoing mentorship from seasoned Trainer and Due Diligence Underwriters.

Key Responsibilities
• Review residential mortgage loan files for credit, compliance, data integrity, and documentation completeness under the supervision of senior underwriters.
• Apply investor, agency, and proprietary guidelines to determine loan eligibility and risk factors.
• Analyze borrower income, assets, credit, and collateral to support underwriting conclusions.
• Identify documentation deficiencies, inconsistencies, and potential red flags.
• Prepare clear, concise findings and support documentation for internal quality review.
• Participate in structured training sessions, case studies, and performance assessments.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure accuracy, consistency, and timely completion of assignments.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to Opus CMC’s quality and compliance standards.
Required Qualifications
• Minimum of 3 years of frontline mortgage underwriting experience (retail, wholesale, or correspondent).
• Strong understanding of income analysis, credit risk assessment, and collateral review.
• Familiarity with agency guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac) and common mortgage products.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment with high attention to detail.
• Proficiency with LOS systems, AUS findings, and standard mortgage documentation.
To continue employment in the trainee program and advance to a Due Diligence Underwriter role, candidates must successfully complete and pass the Opus CMC Due Diligence Underwriting Course. This includes:
• Classroom and self-paced training modules
• Practical loan file exercises
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with non-QM, jumbo, or private investor guidelines
• Exposure to due diligence, secondary market reviews, or quality control audits
• Strong Excel skills and comfort working with data driven workflows
