Job Description

SUMMARY: The Perinatal Scrub Technician (PST) performs duties related to patient care and comfort under the direct supervision of licensed personnel. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PST functions as a team member in the provision of patient care, before, during, and immediately following the surgical procedure performed in the Operating Room. In addition, the PST performs special procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists in the patient preparation, positioning, and surgical preps as directed.

2. Assist in the provision of a safe and aseptic environment for the Perinatal patient.

3. Jointly with the Circulating Charge RN, is responsible for the needle, sponge, and instrument counts.

4. Shows respect for instruments and handle them carefully. Uses, with understanding, special equipment and is responsible for cleaning them. Performs other related duties as needed to facilitate workflow and to promote health care.

5. Assures that work and assignment areas are clean and that equipment and supplies are properly cared for and stored daily. Assists with table instrument and room clean-up.

6. Provides patient assistance through successful training experience with the unit setting:

A. Answers call lights, and intercoms promptly and courteously.

B. Performs, records, and reports TPRs, BPs, weights, and I & Os.

C. Performs personal hygiene tasks related to patient care, peri-care, care of nails and hair, changing of linen, and dressing patients. Assists with feeding of patients if necessary.

E. Collects urine specimens under the supervision of licensed personnel.

F. Reports abnormal findings or significant changes in patient conditions or patient requests promptly to the nurse.

G. Performs treatments such as sitz baths and applying packs after appropriate training.

7. Performs Unit Coordinator duties such as but not limited to:

A. Completes birth certificates, paternity forms, and immunization records as appropriate in a timely manner.

B. Maintain patients’ prenatal files, and all forms, and assembled patients’ charts.

C. Assists in requisitioning supplies for the unit.

D. Maintain logbooks, needed records, and data-collecting forms.

E. Assists in obtaining witness signatures.

F. Exercises tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality in communicating with visitors and hospital personnel.

8. Able to adapt to a changing workload. Can perform in a precise and accurate manner in handling priority tasks and emergencies. Completes work assignments within a scheduled hour. Perform other duties as requested. Assist other staff members as needed.

9. Participates in Quality Control/Quality Improvement process as directed by the Perinatal Manager or Clinical Coordinator.

10. Attends department/staff meetings as required (75% or a minimum of eight to meet successful standards) and in-service and continuing education classes related to unit and facility needs. (CPR, annual skills updated, and orientation are mandatory).

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Develops and maintains a good working relationship among healthcare team members.

2. Communicate with patients, family, and visitors in a tactful and helpful manner.

3. Performs personal hygiene tasks related to patient care.

4. Demonstrates attention to patient safety issues by using and checking patient bed rails, bed position, restraints when indicated, equipment, and obstacles within the patient’s area. Observe safety signs posted in patient areas including infection control precautions, NPO signs, etc....

5. Accountable for assignment and their completion within scheduled work hours. Maintains an appropriate time record.

6. Supports and promotes safety standards, identifies risk situations, and intervenes appropriately.

7. Records information accurately and legibly.

8. Prepares equipment packs for use in the operating procedure.

9. Prepare for the following procedure.

10. Do shave preps when requested by the Perinatal Director or Clinical Manager.

11. Other duties assigned from time to time.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

1. High School diploma or GED.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

1. Current certification through (CNA/CORT) or a hospital training program preferred.

2. Current AHA BLS certification required upon employment.
