The Senior Exercise Physiologist in the Stress Testing Department is professionally trained in preventive health and rehabilitation field. Duties will include exercise test clearance, performance and preliminary interpretation.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Using departmental care standards and protocols and all applicable hospital standards, policies and procedures, evaluates patient needs and implements exercise modalities based on the individual’s defined needs.
2. Works collaboratively with the covering physician to assess the patients for contraindications to exercise testing and obtains clearance for the exercise tests.
3. Completes the informed consent with the patient.
4. Evaluates the patient for special precautions.
5. Determines the appropriate procedure and protocol for each patient’s test.
6. Contacts the covering physician to obtain a new order, when the initial order is not possible due to the patient’s condition.
7. Supervises/conducts exercise tolerance testing with an RN or another clinical exercise physiologist/exercise test technician and performs the following with the covering physician in the facility:
8. Monitors the ECG constantly throughout the test and determines the presence of unsafe and clinically significant rhythms.
9. Measures the patient’s blood pressure response intermittently throughout the test.
10. Determines when the test should be terminated either for medical reasons or for patient tolerance.
11. Evaluates the patient during the test recovery period and remains alert for post-exercise complications.
12. Recognizes safe completion of recovery period and allows patient to leave the testing area.
13. Participates in data entry and other duties related to the exercise tolerance test documentation.
14. Completes the exercise testing data forms with a preliminary interpretation.
15. Collates the exercise test data into a package of information for the final interpretation by the covering physician.
16. Contacts the covering physician with occurrence of any condition that might suggest a medically hazardous condition exists.
17. Initiates CPR and calls a Code Blue or a Rapid Response Team when appropriate.
18. Assists in the development and updating of policy and procedure manuals.
19. Assists in the supervision of student interns.
20. Assists with evaluating and maintaining the quality and quantity of patient care services in relation to the performance improvement program.
21. Participates in community health fairs.

22. May work in the Cardiac Rehab Department as needed.
23. Performs other duties as assigned.

2. Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. American College of Sport Medicine Certification as a Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist is required.
2. CPR/BCLS and ACLS Certification is required.
3. Master’s Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology or health related field.
Preferred:

1. N/A

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Advanced knowledge of exercise physiology, nutrition, risk factor modification strategies, counseling techniques, and use of educational programs and technologies as applied to cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation services and exercise tolerance testing.
2. At least 3-5 years of experience in delivery of cardiovascular/pulmonary rehabilitation and at least 3-5 years of experience performing exercise tolerance testing.
3. Expertise with a personal computer; Microsoft Word, (word processing) Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet analysis), Microsoft Access (database analysis), Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation graphics), or other related software is required.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
