POSITION SUMMARY
This is technical, administrative, and supervisory work of more than average difficulty in the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fire-Rescue Department.
An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the review and approval of building plans for compliance with the fire/life safety standards of the Florida Fire Prevention Code. The employee conducts or supervises research on building codes and code enforcement problems, interprets codes, and recommends changes to building codes and standards. The employee also supervises staff engaged in fire safety inspections including the high rise, sprinklers, and social services residential facilities programs. In the absence of the Fire Marshal, the employee functions in that capacity and assumes all related authority and responsibility.
The Assistant Fire Marshal exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment in determining compliance with codes and standards and in managing assigned programs and represents the City of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue on several boards and committees. The employee works under the general direction of the Fire Marshal, who reviews work and conferences with the employee, by direct observation of completed work and through reports received from other City departments and outside agencies.
This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and the IAFF.
Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. Plans, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of subordinates in the review and approval of building plans for conformance with the fire/life safety standards of the Florida Fire Prevention Code, and to ensure the accuracy of mathematical and engineering calculations.
Plans, manages, and supervises fire safety inspection personnel to assure compliance with State, Federal and local codes, and regulations.
Confers with attorneys, public officials, architects, engineers, builders, contractors, building officials, property owners, and Fire Rescue and Building Department staff on matters concerning fire/life safety systems, inspection, fire prevention practices, procedures, and enforcement, exercising independent judgment in rendering final decisions.
Assists the Fire Marshal by making recommendations regarding operational policies, expenditures, goals, objectives, and work plans and other administrative issues; by providing input and analysis regarding code interpretation, plans review and field inspections; by responding to and supervising the investigation of large fires and coordinating investigative actions with multi-agencies such as the State Fire Marshal's Office, Police Department, FBI, ATF, and other agencies as required; and by assessing personnel training needs and assisting in the planning, organizing and implementation of training programs.
Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, authorizes the condemnation of faulty and hazardous installations, issues stop work orders, reviews citations issued by Police Officers when assigned to the Bureau and handles the closing of buildings, independently responsible for these actions in the absence of the Fire Marshal.
Assists project developers with building permit process and explains procedures for obtaining approval for building projects.
Conducts and/or coordinates research on building codes and code enforcement problems, recommends changes to codes, regulations, inspection procedures and inspection fees.
Determines and calculates inspection fees, maintains records, prepares, and submits reports on revenue received from plans examination and inspection.
Establishes policies, practices, and procedures for the section, obtains approval, implements and ensures compliance by subordinates.
Serves as the representative of the Fire Prevention Bureau, Fire-Rescue and City on development review committees, assessing impact of developments on fire protection and water supply.
Represents the Fire Rescue Department on fire/life safety matters before the unsafe structure board, planning and zoning board, code enforcement boards, the board of rules and appeals and related committees and boards.
Reviews new and amended state laws relating to fire/life safety, assesses their impact on the Fire Rescue Department and the City and advises administrative superiors.
Recommends, in the interest of the City, that eligible applicants be hired and that subordinate employees be transferred, suspended, promoted, terminated, reassigned, or disciplined; prepares written performance evaluations and conducts evaluation conferences with immediate subordinates; recommends granting or withholding merit pay increases based on performance ratings.
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget request for the Fire Prevention Bureau including prioritized listings or recommendations for capital expenditures, purchase of new equipment, changes in personnel staffing and other expenditures, along with written justification for budget recommendations. Administers approved section budget.
Performs related work as required.
- Possess a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in fire science, business or public administration or related field.
- Have at least two (2) years of continuous service in the classification of Fire Safety Captain with the City of Fort Lauderdale.
- Be able to obtain and maintain the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) Assistant Fire Marshal Certification within six months of appointment.
- A copy of required documents must be submitted with the online application.

- Legible photocopy of college diploma or an official sealed transcript (for preference points and/or if degree is being used to qualify).
- All experience, college education and training requirements must be completed no later than December 10th of the year the exam is administered.
- Candidates who do not provide documentation of completion of all college education and training by December 10th of the year the exam is administered will NOT be included on the promotional list.
EXAMINATION PROCESS:
The examination process will consist of a Written Exam and an Assessment Exercise. As per the Rank and File Collective Bargaining Agreement, the examination component weights will be applied as follows:
- Written Exam: 40%
- Assessment Exercise: 60%
TENTATIVE TESTING DATE: These are tentative dates and may be subject to change.
- Tentative Written Exam: Week of August 31, 2026
- Tentative Challenge Review Sessions: Week of August 31, 2026
- Tentative Assessment Exercise dates: Week of October 12, 2026
A minimum passing score will be established as outlined in Article 11 of the Rank and File Collective Bargaining Agreement.
