Position Title: Director Reliability

Scope & Responsibility of Director Reliability: (Not limited to)

  • Responsible for continuous improvement of the OEMS Mechanical Integrity/Asset Management elements
  • Leads the strategy to maximize asset availability, safety, and operational efficiency by directing Reliability Engineering, inspection, and preventative/predictive programs.
  • Oversees root cause analysis (RCA), minimizes equipment downtime, manages reliability budgets, and ensures compliance with industry standards and safety.
  • Leads Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA/RCA) for major equipment failures and ensures corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence.
  • Develops and implements the organization's Reliability roadmap, focusing on asset integrity, risk reduction, and cost-effective maintenance.
  • Use data analytics, vibration analysis, and condition-based monitoring (CBM) to optimize Preventative Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) programs.
  • Manages teams of fixed equipment, rotating, corrosion and inspection resources to provide technical support for repairs and improvements.
  • Manages the entire lifecycle of equipment from installation to decommissioning, utilizing asset criticality analysis.
  • Manages capital and operational budgets for reliability projects; ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, and industry standards (e.g., API).
  • Champions mechanical integrity and safe work practices in high-hazard environments.
  • Establishes and monitors Key Performance Indicator (KPIs) such as Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR).
  • Develops and sustains an Operational Excellence Management System that standardizes operating procedures, maintenance workflows, startup and shutdown of equipment and technical guides.
  • Serves as a change agent to embed a “reliability mindset” across all departments, fostering a culture of ownership where the frontline is empowered to identify and solve problems.
  • Frequently collaborates with employees in the field (operators, maintenance, etc.) to evaluate, identify and communicate relevant information related to unit availability.
  • Contributes to team efforts during the final checkout of new installations, including active involvement in factory and site acceptance testing to verify full compliance with functional specifications.
  • Develops contact list for turnaround contractors and repairs facilities.
  • Assures plant compliance with ASME, API, NACE, and PSM guidelines for preventative maintenance, inspection, repair, and mechanical integrity compliance for existing and new plant equipment.
  • Provides technical support to Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, Process and Project personnel regarding selection, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and long-term reliability of plant equipment.
  • Leads team equipment capabilities to partner with equipment vendors and repair shops to resolve technical issues or complex equipment repairs.
  • Provides leadership on equipment failure investigations to determine causal effects and make mitigation recommendations.
  • Leads team effort for the continuous improvement of equipment reliability through the development and application of effective reliability strategies such as: risk-based maintenance strategies, identification & assessment of risks, root cause and bad actor analysis, and spare parts reviews.
  • Defines Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs) within which a piece of equipment must operate to ensure it remains safe, reliable and within its design integrity.
  • Assures compliance to PSM standards (MOC’s, PSSR’s, Procedures, Audits, etc.)
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor/Management.

Education & Experience for Director Reliability:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering, Master’s degree preferred; 15 years’ experience, 5+ years’ managerial experience.
  • Significant experience in refinery/petrochemical maintenance and reliability, including leadership roles is preferred.
  • Expertise in reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), FMEA, API standards, and CMMS systems.
  • CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) or CRL (Certified Reliability Leader) preferred.


Other Qualifications of Director Reliability:

  • Ability to manage costs, design, implement, and maintain systems designed to optimize the performance of the Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) maintenance function.
  • Strong leadership, technical coaching, root cause analysis, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data-driven decision-making and identifying “bad actor” equipment.
  • Change Management Proficiency with the ability to navigate organizational resistance and sustain long-term behavioral changes.
  • Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • High proficiency in Microsoft applications (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Successful completion of all company mandated &/or job-related training programs deemed appropriate.

Physical & Cognitive Demands of Director Reliability:

  • COGNITIVE DEMANDS: Meet deadlines, focus attention, work independently, independent judgments, work with a team, communicating, reading comprehension, critical thinking/troubleshooting.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: seeing, speaking, hearing, sitting, walk/climb, stand/reach, listen, writing, driving, keyboarding, Working in extreme heat/cold. Push/pull/lift/carry 25 pounds.
