About This Position

The Certified Surgical Technician assumes all the duties of the scrubbed member of the surgical team. Accurately operates the sterilizers and performs other duties associated with processing instruments and trays. Works as a team member with various staff, medical staff, vendors, and others in the periOperative area (this includes surgical cases, endoscopy, and OB).

Job Requirements
Knowledge of /Skill/Ability to: Knowledge of sterile techniques as it relates to the surgical environment. Knowledge of instruments, equipment, procedures of various specialties. Ability to act in the capacity of the scrubbed team member of the surgical team. Takes call on a rotational basis. Ability to organize workspace, easily and quickly in emergent situations. Able to set priorities quickly and independently. Knowledge of decontamination techniques, principles, and precautions. Knowledge of regulatory and practice expectations as it relates to the surgical and sterilization environment. Know resources and actively access them when needed.

License/Certification: Must be Certified Surgical Technologist eligible and receive certification within six months of hire. Current BLS through American Heart Association.

Education and/or Experience:
Education: A graduate of a program in Operating Room Technology, or equivalent. Must have thorough knowledge of, and the ability to apply that knowledge consistently in technical procedures and sterilization techniques requiring accuracy, precision, and aseptic technique in accordance with training. Experience: One-year clinical scrubbing experience or two years working scrubbing experience. One year working in processing and sterilization.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance
Able to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work under physical and mental stress for prolonged periods of time. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Ability to juggle many priorities simultaneously. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals or infectious diseases. Position involves standing, walking, stooping, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds). Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; and hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment. Occasional exposure to toxic chemicals or infectious diseases. Must have hearing skills to perform as a scrubbed member of the team while wearing personal protective equipment such as a mask. Dexterity to handle instruments, equipment, supplies, etc. appropriately and timely. Must speak, read and understand English. Able to stand for prolonged times moving from sterile field to sterile field without compromising technique. Able to work in an environment with potentially hazardous chemicals wearing proper PPEs and complying with prudent work practices to protect self from harm.
