About This Position

SUMMARY: Performs technical and administrative duties for the efficient operation of the Radiology Department. Responsible for implementation and follow-through of invasive procedures, including but not limited to biopsies, myelograms, arteriograms, and medication of patients as directed by physicians. This will include monitoring during procedures and recovery of patients after procedures. As Mammography Nurse will implement and monitor all mammography patients’ follow-up care and education. This will include preparation of patients, monitoring during procedures, administration of medications, and recovery of patients after procedures. The OP nurse will be responsible for Radiology and ER patient call backs for laboratory and diagnostic tests which may include the following tasks: Review of daily culture reports in the ER, review of radiology orders daily, review of x-ray variances in the ER and participate in performance improvement studies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Will initiate or assist with invasive procedures under physician direction or supervision. This includes but is not limited to biopsies, myelograms, arteriograms, adenosine/thalliums, dobutamine stress echo test and other procedures as directed by physician.
  2. Documents assessment / treatment / vital signs and response to treatment in patient record.
  3. Reviews all culture reports and radiology orders daily.
  4. Ensures that sterile technique is followed when appropriate to prevent cross-contamination. Provides protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards to reduce radiation exposure to patients.
  5. Maintains crash carts, drug boxes, cardiac monitor, and o2 tanks daily in all areas of Radiology.
  6. Keeps a log of all patients monitored by R.N. during procedures.
  7. Ensure that all patients receiving mammograms obtain educational information on self-care.
  8. Will become familiar with and abide by all state and federal regulations pertaining to mammography and assure that all patients with abnormal results are tracked until pathology report is received.
  9. Demonstrates proficiency in managing resources, utilizing equipment in a safe manner.
  10. Attends 75% a minimum of staff meetings annually to be successful. Accountable for reading minutes of monthly meetings. Participating in conference and education programs required quality improvement activities to improve patient care.
  11. Implements and documents are timely interventions appropriate to patient needs.
  12. Works closely with the physicians to identify patient goals and interventions
  13. Able to adapt to change with the workload. Works independently with minimal supervision.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Willing to cross train to Emergency Room / Outpatient job to cover as needed.
  2. Calls patients at home to ensure they understand preparation for radiology tests they will be having the next day.
  3. Current knowledge and clinical skills are appropriate to the age specific needs of the population served.
  4. Utilizes the chain of command in situations where a resolution of the issues exceeds your authority.
  5. Clearly and accurately communicates pertinent aspects of the patients’ care to other members of the patient care team.
    1. Documentation in patients records will be problem oriented and will provide relevant, factual and accurate information.
    2. Documentation in the patient’s record will always be legible.
  6. Behavior indicates a role model as a professional hospital employee. Strives to improve perceptions of department and hospital.
  7. Independent thinking to exercise own judgement in determining actions in emergency situations and maintaining control.
  8. Demonstrates knowledge and the ability to apply ethnic and legal principles to practices.
  9. Supports and promotes safety standards, identifies risk situations and intervenes appropriately.
  10. Department specific functions are required in specific departments. These functions are related to the operation and maintenance of equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals.
  11. Other duties as assigned from time to time.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  1. Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in patient care settings.
  2. Current licensure to practice registered nursing and or vocational in the State of California required.
  3. Current CPR certification is required.
