Position Overview and Responsibilities
St. John's Preparatory School seeks a compassionate and dependable Substitute School Nurse to provide coverage in the School Health Office, which is staffed by three registered nurses serving the Middle School and High School. The substitute nurse will provide coverage for regular school nurses, as needed, in either division.
This is an hourly, on-call position with work scheduled based on staffing needs during the academic year. This position is not eligible for benefits.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide nursing care to students and respond to illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies.
- Assess students' health needs and determine appropriate treatment or referrals.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, school policies, and Massachusetts regulations.
- Maintain accurate health records and documentation in compliance with state requirements.
- Implement and follow Standing Orders and support the school's coordinated health program.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, faculty, administrators, and healthcare providers regarding student health concerns.
- Promote a safe, healthy, and supportive school environment while maintaining student confidentiality.
Skills and Competencies
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Calm, compassionate, and professional demeanor, particularly in emergency situations.
- Proficiency with computers and electronic health records.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the school community.
Education and Experience
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Minimum of two years of nursing experience required; experience in a school health office, pediatrics, emergency care, or community health is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents and young adults preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
- Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
- Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
- Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
