Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: Temporary Part-time Tree Arborist under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, performs professional and supervisory work in the planning, planting, maintenance, preservation, inspection, and removal of trees and shrubs on Township property. Supervises employees engaged in tree-related activities and performs related duties as required. Works under the general direction of the Director of Public Works with respect to programs, policies, operations, and fiscal matters.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises employees engaged in tree maintenance, planting, pruning, removal, and related activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Plans and implements programs for the planting, preservation, maintenance, and removal of trees and shrubs on Township property.
• Inspects trees and shrubs for disease, pests, structural defects, storm damage, and hazardous conditions and recommends appropriate corrective action.
• Determines appropriate tree and shrub species for specific locations and environmental conditions.
• Supervises and instructs employees in proper techniques for planting, pruning, fertilizing, treatment, and removal of trees and shrubs.
• Oversees tree pruning, removal, stump removal, planting, and related work performed by Township personnel and contractors.
• Evaluates tree-related complaints and concerns from residents and coordinates appropriate responses.
• Develops specifications and assists with the procurement of equipment, materials, trees, shrubs, and related supplies.
• Maintains records, work orders, tree inventories, reports, and related documentation.
• Participates in the preparation and administration of the tree program budget.
• Ensures that applicable Township ordinances and State and Federal requirements are followed.
• Keeps current with developments, standards, and best practices in arboriculture and tree care.
• Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous or storm-damaged trees.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent relevant education and professional experience may be considered.
Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in arboriculture, tree care, forestry, or a related field. Municipal experience and supervisory experience are preferred.
Certification: ISA Certified Arborist certification is required within ninety (90) days of appointment.
License: Valid New Jersey Driver's License is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of arboricultural principles, tree biology, planting, pruning, preservation, and removal techniques.
• Knowledge of common tree diseases, pests, structural defects, and appropriate treatment methods.
• Knowledge of tree-care equipment, materials, and safety practices.
• Knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, and best practices governing municipal tree care.
• Ability to inspect and assess trees and identify hazardous conditions.
• Ability to plan and supervise tree-related work and direct employees effectively.
• Ability to prepare specifications, maintain accurate records, and assist with budgets and procurement.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, Township officials, and the public.
• Ability to perform work safely in varying weather and field conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, including walking over uneven terrain, climbing or working around trees, operating or overseeing tree-care equipment, lifting and carrying materials, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Pay Rate: $40.15-$58.21 no health benefits or pension
