Responsibilities

The FRESH Jr Staff Crew Leader is the supervisor of the FRESH Crew. This person is dedicated to development and implementation of experiential education that engages youth in the “how and why” of FRESH New London’s mission. In the Spring and Summer, the youth program is agriculturally based but we blend in workshops that help with the understanding of our community work. During the Fall and Winter Crew Leaders will transition back into leadership development, co-planning and co-facilitating the end-of-year workshops and debriefing the year to make goals for the upcoming one. The Crew Leader requires a high degree of organization, innovation, and flexibility, as short and long-term planning often occur concurrent with program delivery. Programming will be focused at our office, the FRESH Farm and at community locations where we engage the community in our work. This is a vital staff position in a growing non-profit organization; our strong hope is to hire an individual who anticipates growth within the position.

This is a temporary position.

Essential Functions

  • Be peer leader for crew members in all FRESH Crew program activities;
  • Assist in planning activities and projects for FRESH Crew. Listen to youth about their interest and understanding of our food system work and using this as the spring board;
  • Provide feedback about program to adult staff;
  • Assist Crew Members to track hours and provide reminders to completing timecards;
  • Evaluate and guide youth towards resources and actions which further progress towards group goals;
  • Continual collaborative work evaluating and communicating progress and obstacles;
  • Outcome tracking and tracking other program details;
  • Keep the mission of the organization as a target which we are working towards;
  • Development of a safe FRESH crew environment that parallels what we would like to see in the larger community. This means working out conflict, self, peer and greater community reflections and participatory development of programming;
  • Continual self-learning in order to best facilitate content.

Special Requirements

  • Willingness to work in both office and outdoor/ agricultural settings, including some physical agricultural work.
    • Willing and able to drive pick up truck, if person has driver's license.


Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Interest in engaging the broader community in social change;
  • Experience with fresh, whole foods cooking and nutrition preferred;
  • A commitment to working with young people in a respectful and empowering manner;
  • A demonstrated interest in or a willingness to learn about community food security, community-based just food systems, empowerment around issues of local food system and/or sustainable agriculture;
  • The ability to communicate to a diverse range of people in the community. Commitment to working actively against racism;
  • Qualities of flexibility, dedication, self-motivation, organization and confidence;
  • Desire and ability to work in a collaborative work environment;
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn about the city and county of New London;
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish and English preferred);
  • Former Jr Staff at FRESH;
  • Successful Background Check CORI/SORI, if over 18 years old;
  • Valid Driver’s License/ successful Driver's License Check, a plus.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Ability to sit and/or for extended periods of time in front of a computer screen is an essential aspect of the position.
  • There may be a need to lift and/or move materials or equipment.
  • Work on a farm;
  • Weekend and evening availability is required for this position;
  • Work in dierent environments, including on a farm and/or outdoors in all seasons;
  • Perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time;
  • Flexibility with scheduling is required.
  • Live in or near New London to maintain our garden sites.
  • Handle, or feel objects, tools or controls;
  • Reach; traverse; sit (usually for longer periods of time); occasionally ascend/descend; and position self (to) move;
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards;
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

Compensation and Benefits

Location: Work will be primarily performed at F.R.E.S.H New London, CT sites. Work is not eligible forremote work.

Schedule: One day after school into evening hours, Saturday mornings and other flexible hours during the regular work week.

Compensation: The pay salary for this position is $16.94 - $16.94 / hour.

Benefits: This position iis not eligible for benefits.
