Job Description
City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh’s leading professional theatre dedicated to new plays, is seeking a House Manager/Bartender to support a welcoming, efficient front-of-house experience. This seasonal, part-time role requires evening and weekend availability during performances.
In this seasonal role, the successful candidate will work House Manager and Bartender shifts as assigned based on staffing needs and performance schedules. The position typically averages 10 to 20 hours per performance week, with an anticipated end date in late June 2027 with the possibility of additional work as scheduling needs evolve.
City Theatre seeks someone who enjoys creating a welcoming patron experience and can bring professionalism, sound judgment, and strong interpersonal skills to a fast-paced public-facing environment. Front of House staff play a key role in connecting audiences with City Theatre and representing the organization with warmth and care.
Requirements:Principal House Manager responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
· Greet patrons entering the theatre.
· Answer questions and provide information regarding City Theatre and upcoming performances and events.
· Manage a team of up to six volunteer ushers and lead the pre-performance usher meeting.
· Maintain close communication with the Box Office and Stage Management to support the prompt start of each performance.
· Maintain communication via headset with Stage Management during performances to address patron concerns.
· Seat late-arriving patrons and assist with reseating patrons who leave during the performance.
· Occasionally clean public spaces and restock restroom supplies.
· Complete and distribute a House Manager Report for each shift, documenting performance details.
· Secure the building and activate the security system at the end of each shift.
· Learn and engage with each production by both reading and seeing performances (staff will be provided with free opportunities to see all performances in City Theatre’s main season).
· Develop working knowledge of City Theatre’s accessibility services, including ASL interpretation, audio description, and open captioning.
Principal Bartender responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
· Greet patrons entering the lounge and provide friendly, efficient service.
· Answer questions and provide information regarding City Theatre and upcoming performances and events.
· Process cash and credit card transactions through the point-of-sale system (Square Register).
· Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, simple mixed drinks, soft drinks, coffee, and tea.
· Verify patron identification in accordance with Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board requirements.
· Balance and close the cash drawer and complete the nightly sales report at the end of each shift.
· Restocking concessions and bar supplies.
· Cleaning of the bar, lounge tables, and restrooms as needed.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
· Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
· Bar knowledge and cash-handling experience are a plus but not required. Training will be provided.
· Ability to multitask effectively while maintaining a high standard of customer service.
· The ability to communicate thoughtfully and professionally about solutions, capacities, and needs on both a departmental and personal level.
· The capacity to manage a high volume of customer traffic.
· The ability to use independent judgment when working with customers.
· Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a professional, dependable approach to work.
· Current certification in Pennsylvania’s Responsible Alcohol Management Program (R.A.M.P.) or the ability to complete the online R.A.M.P. training course within 30 days of hire. Training costs paid by City Theatre.
· A commitment and ability to advocate for “radical hospitality” across the organization.
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word) is a plus, and training support is available.

· A love or appreciation of theatre/the arts is encouraged.
Requirements of the position:
· Availability for flexible evening and weekend hours based on the theatre’s performance schedule.
· This role requires frequent movement between multiple buildings on City Theatre’s campus, climbing stairs, standing for extended periods, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
Compensation and reporting:
This part-time, seasonal, non-exempt position reports to the Patron Services Manager and is supervised by the Director of Patron Services. Compensation is $16.00 per hour, plus tips earned during Bartender shifts.
