Assigned Fleet Size: 8 Open-deck units
Specialized Sectors: Open-Deck (Flatbed/Step-Deck)
Reports To: General Manager - Transport
Target Start Date: ASAP
Pay Range - $27.50 - 32.50 Per Hour
Role Summary: The Flatbed/Stepdeck Freight Dispatcher is responsible for optimizing fleet
utilization, ensuring strict DOT/FMCSA compliance, and driving profitability for specialized
open-deck operations. This role acts as the primary operational link between drivers, customers,
and management.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
- Load Procurement & Fleet Optimization
- Source, negotiate, and assign high-margin freight for flatbed and stepdeck equipment.
- Plan optimal routes based on cost structures (Owner-Operator vs. Company Driver), delivery timelines, and Hours of Service (HOS).
- Maximize asset utilization while actively minimizing deadhead and out-of-route miles.
Safety, Permitting & Regulatory Compliance
- Enforce FMCSA regulations, ELD monitoring, HOS rules, and load securement
- protocols (chains, straps, tarps).
- Acquire and manage state permits, route surveys, and escorts for
- Over-Dimensional/Overweight (OD/OW) loads while adhering to bridge laws and
- curfews.
- Rigorously vet external partner carriers (MC/DOT authority, insurance, SMS
- scores) and conduct routine audits of driver logs, accidents, and cargo claims.
Driver & Customer Coordination
- Act as the direct point of contact for drivers, brokers, and customers, delivering
- proactive transit updates.
- Resolve real-time operational disruptions (equipment breakdowns, delays, job
- site access issues) quickly to minimize financial impact.
- Manage dispatch documentation and ensure precise data entry within the
- Transportation Management System (TMS).
Key Candidate Requirements
- Experience: 5+ years dispatching flatbed and stepdeck equipment.
- Technical & Regulatory Expertise:
- Strong proficiency with telematics/ELD tools (e.g., Samsara, Motive) and FMCSA
- rules.
- Foundational knowledge of OD/OW freight processes.
- Familiarity with Department of Defense (DoD) transportation operations and the
- SDDC TEAMS platform.
Background Clearance: Must be able to successfully pass a standard background
check.
