Job Description:
The Preconstruction Engineer supports the preconstruction department in all aspects of project planning and development. The Preconstruction Engineer works closely with the preconstruction team to analyze project specifications, gather relevant data, and assist in the preparation of accurate cost estimates and project schedules.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Ability to work on multiple estimates/projects at the same time.
  • Prepares work to be estimated by gathering required project documents.
  • Ability to read drawings, project requirements, and analyze other applicable documents to prepare estimates.
  • Identifies labor, material, and time requirements at the individual contributor level of competency.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders during estimate creation to ensure overall accuracy.
  • Collect different quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • The preconstruction engineer will assist in the bidding of construction projects by preparing conceptual, lump sum, and GMP estimates, proposals for new projects, and soliciting of subcontractor bids.
  • Assist with management subcontractor solicitation process.
  • Build and maintain subcontractor relationships.
  • Assist with preparation of subcontractor bid analysis.
  • Review project schedules and assist in preparing General Conditions.
  • Assist with final assembly of estimate for presentation to owner.
  • Assure clean handoff of estimate, bid info, drawings, specs, etc. to project team.
  • Assist construction operations team in negotiating contracts, change orders, etc.
  • Draft scopes of work for subcontracts along with Preconstruction Manager(s) and/or Assistant Preconstruction Manager(s).
  • Update master subcontractor/vendor lists in Procore.
  • Assist with maintaining historical data for unit prices.
  • Complete onscreen takeoff of project quantities for all scopes of work.
  • Assist with preparation of internal estimates based on use of historical cost information from bids and completed work.
  • Assist with design review and analysis in order to identify value engineering solutions
  • Assist with the preparation proposal information for clients.
  • Solicit and maintain communication with subcontractors and vendors.
  • Prepare subcontractor bid packages for distribution.
  • Transmit addenda and other bid information to subcontractors and vendors.
  • Ensure proper coverage from subcontractors prior to bid day.
  • Review bid requirements thoroughly and ask follow-up questions on every bid.
  • Assist with preparation and understand scopes of work for each trade assigned.
  • Develop RFIs and clarifications to ensure adequate subcontractor coverage.
  • Assist with communicate the award of subcontracts in a timely manner to ensure release of materials and equipment.
  • Ensure subs are aware of and committed to project schedule.
  • Prepare invitations to bid, which should include but not limited to, providing subcontractors with available project information (i.e. project team, permit status, project schedule, etc.)
  • Seek and qualify new subcontractors.
  • Occasional travel is a requirement of this position.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree, required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, or engineering technology, preferred.
  • 0+ years Commercial Construction experience, required.
  • 1-3+ years Commercial Construction experience, preferred.
  • 1-3+ years Commercial Construction estimating experience, preferred.
  • 1+ years Data Center experience, preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, required.
  • Microsoft Project, Bluebeam, Procore and Bluebeam experience, preferred.
  • Ability to read project documentation, including but not limited to: blueprints, project specifications, CPM schedules, submittals, etc.

  • Ability to see at close and distance ranges and the ability to see and correctly distinguish color.
  • Ability to lift equipment in small spaces without mechanical assistance, weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work inside and outside.
  • Ability to travel occasionally as needed (up to 10 days out of the work month).
