HOURS: Primarily Monday - Friday; days

Carilion Clinic Foundation is seeking a strategic and collaborative Communications Consultant to advance our mission of improving health and transforming lives through philanthropy. This role is instrumental in elevating the Foundation’s visibility, strengthening donor engagement, and supporting fundraising initiatives through donor centered, advancement focused writing and integrated communications strategies.
Working closely with Foundation leadership and development officers, the consultant will develop and execute communications strategies that positions Carilion Clinic as a worthy, not-for-profit healthcare resource, support major gifts, campaigns, and annual giving using purposeful, persuasive writing to move donors along the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship continuum while ensuring alignment with the health system’s broader brand and reputation.
The ideal candidate brings experience in healthcare, nonprofit, or academic medicine environments and has a strong understanding of fundraising communications, donor journeys, and reputation management, with particular strength in writing for philanthropic audiences.
The Marketing & Communications Consultant
  • Develops advanced content expertise in designated specialty areas while maintaining a strong working knowledge of other marketing and communications disciplines and organizational priorities.
  • Participates on multidisciplinary teams as a communications resource and subject matter expert.
  • Participates on, and may lead, large-scale strategic and tactical projects. Monitors timelines, content, and deliverables to ensure deadlines and organizational needs are met.
  • Produces tailored marketing and communication products and services that support organizational goals, applying advanced expertise and continuous process improvement.
  • Serves as a primary contact for vendors and internal leadership regarding project needs, deliverables, and service expectations.
  • Engages in complex consulting interactions, anticipating needs and developing collaborative solutions. Uses consulting and change management processes to evaluate outcomes and recommend improvements.
  • Builds, maintains, and nurtures effective working relationships with leaders, colleagues, and external partners.
  • Identifies and promotes opportunities to strengthen organizational culture and support change initiatives using best practices in communication and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities Include
  • Working with Foundation leadership and development officers to steward donors through strategic, written communications that clearly illustrate donor intent, philanthropic impact, and investment outcomes.
  • Partnering with major and principal gift officers to develop donor‑facing written materials, including proposals, customized stewardship communications, and campaign narratives, to support cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
  • Producing the annual Foundation Impact Report, serving as a cornerstone stewardship and advancement tool for donors and prospects.
  • Updating and managing the Foundation website, regularly refreshing content with purposeful donor‑focused stories that demonstrate the importance and impact of philanthropy.
  • Working with Marketing and Communications to integrate philanthropy messages within Carilion Clinic’s existing social media communications, ensuring consistency between public‑facing messaging and donor communications.
  • Helping build the image of Carilion Clinic as a not‑for‑profit, both internally and externally, with advancement‑aligned storytelling that demonstrates charitable impact.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in advancement, development, or fundraising communications.
  • Writing for healthcare foundations, higher education, or academic medicine audiences.
  • Direct collaboration with major or principal gift officers.
What We Require:

Education: Bachelor’s degree is required. 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years of related experience is required, including at least 3 years of experience in a specialized marketing or communications function.

Licensure/Certification: None required.

Life Support: Not applicable.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation abilities. Requires strong analytical thinking, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications. Requires strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, and the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately. Must maintain broad knowledge across all marketing and communications areas while developing advanced expertise in one or two specific disciplines.
