Description:

Center for Hope and Safety, located in Bergen County, NJ, is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting survivors of domestic violence and their children. We believe every person has the right to be safe, empowered, and free from violence.

The Community Engagement Coordinator serves as an ambassador for Center for Hope & Safety and is responsible for developing, coordinating, and sustaining an effective volunteer program that supports the organization’s mission of providing safety, empowerment, advocacy, and pathways to healing for survivors of domestic violence and their families.

In collaboration with the Chief Development and Communications Officer, this part-time position working 21 hours per week oversees volunteer recruitment, screening, onboarding, training, scheduling, communication, recognition, and retention. The Coordinator works with program and administrative staff to identify volunteer needs and create meaningful opportunities for individuals, organizations, and corporate groups to contribute their time, skills, and expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit volunteers who align with the mission, values, and needs of Center for Hope & Safety.
  • Build relationships with community organizations, schools, businesses, faith-based organizations, civic groups, professional associations, and other potential volunteer sources in collaboration with the Development team.
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries and provide clear information regarding opportunities, expectations, qualifications, and time commitments.
  • Conduct volunteer screening, interviews, reference checks, background checks, and onboarding in accordance with organizational policies and program requirements.
  • Work with program and administrative leaders to identify volunteer needs, assignments, and appropriate opportunities.
  • Match volunteers with assignments based on skills, interests, availability, training, and program requirements.
  • Develop and maintain volunteer schedules to ensure appropriate coverage for programs, events, community outreach, and organizational activities.
  • Coordinate volunteer participation in special events, community outreach, and other organizational initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential volunteer records, including applications, screening documentation, training, assignments, schedules, hours, and participation.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in social services, nonprofit management, communications, human resources, community engagement, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers, community engagement, nonprofit programs, events, or related activities preferred.
  • Experience working in human services, nonprofit, domestic violence, social services, healthcare, or community-based organizations preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to recruit, motivate, support, and retain volunteers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and databases or volunteer management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in a dynamic human-services environment.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and handle confidential information.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and use standard office equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to perform repetitive keyboard and hand movements.
  • Ability to work at Center for Hope & Safety facilities, community locations, volunteer events, and other organizational settings.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends based on volunteer activities, special events, and organizational needs.
