Job Description

Summary

The Camp Director provides overall leadership, administration, and strategic direction for YWCA York's Camp Cann-Edi-On program. This position is responsible for the year-round planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and growth of the camp program while ensuring a safe, high-quality, and engaging experience for campers, families, and staff.

The Camp Director oversees all aspects of camp operations including program development, budgeting, staffing, compliance, risk management, community partnerships, family engagement, and supervision of camp leadership staff. The Camp Director serves as the primary administrator for Camp Cann-Edi-On and is responsible for ensuring the program aligns with YWCA York's mission, strategic priorities, and licensing requirements.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership and Development
  • Provide overall leadership and vision for Camp Cann-Edi-On.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive camp program that supports youth development, leadership, inclusion, recreation, and enrichment objectives.
  • Establish annual program goals, objectives, and performance measures.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and implement improvements based on participant, family, and staff feedback.
  • Ensure camp programming remains innovative, engaging, developmentally appropriate, and responsive to community needs.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of camp themes, activities, special events, field trips, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Support and supervise the Assistant Director in executing daily camp operations.
Administration and Operations
  • Direct all camp operations and ensure effective execution of daily activities.
  • Develop and maintain camp policies, procedures, manuals, and operational guidelines.
  • Ensure all Department of Human Services licensing regulations, health and safety standards, and organizational requirements are met.
  • Maintain required records, reports, documentation, and compliance files.
  • Oversee risk management practices and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Ensure facilities, equipment, and camp grounds are maintained in a safe and effective manner.
Staff Leadership and Human Resources
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and develop seasonal and year-round camp personnel.
  • Provide direct supervision to the Assistant Director and other designated camp leadership staff.
  • Conduct staff orientations, trainings, coaching sessions, and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture.
  • Address employee relations concerns, performance issues, and disciplinary actions in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained throughout the camp season.
Financial Management
  • Develop and manage the annual camp budget.
  • Monitor expenditures and ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
  • Identify opportunities to increase enrollment, revenue generation, and program sustainability.
  • Assist with grant reporting, fundraising initiatives, sponsorship opportunities, and donor engagement activities related to camp operations.
  • Monitor enrollment trends and establish strategies to achieve participation goals.
Family and Community Relations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for camp families regarding program operations, concerns, and escalated issues.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with families, community partners, schools, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Represent YWCA York and Camp Cann-Edi-On at community meetings, outreach events, and partnership initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships that enhance programming and expand opportunities for campers.
  • Promote camp services and support enrollment efforts.
Strategic Planning and Organizational Leadership
  • Participate in organizational planning efforts as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Program Officer and leadership team to align camp operations with organizational priorities.
  • Provide recommendations regarding program growth, staffing structures, facility utilization, and service enhancements.
  • Prepare reports and presentations related to camp outcomes, enrollment, budget performance, and strategic initiatives.
Other Duties
  • Serve as administrator-on-site during camp operations.
  • Support organization-wide initiatives and special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Program Officer.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervises the Assistant Director for Camp Cann-Edi-On and seasonal camp staff.
  • Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, evaluating, rewarding, and disciplining employees.
  • Oversees workforce planning and staffing strategies to ensure quality program delivery.
  • Ensures compliance with organizational policies and applicable employment laws.
  • Provides leadership and accountability for all camp personnel.
Education and ExperienceRequired
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Recreation, Child Development, Human Services, Youth Development, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in youth programs, child care, camp administration, or related settings.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience managing program budgets and staff teams.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with licensed child care or camp operations.
  • Experience in nonprofit program administration and community partnership development.

  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods during camp operations.
  • Outdoors approximately 75–95% of the workday during camp season.
