Development Engineer in Arlington, Virginia at Lightshift Energy

Description of Role:

As a Development Engineer, you will support the design and engineering of grid-scale battery energy storage projects during the development phase, from initial site screening through concept design and handoff to execution. Reporting to Lightshift's Lead Development Engineer, you will help produce site layouts, preliminary electrical designs, equipment sizing, and interconnection deliverables that shape how our projects get built. You will also research emerging storage technologies and industry trends and support the development team with technical analysis. Core responsibilities will include:

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of battery energy storage systems, their components, and how they are integrated into utility-scale projects;

• Support concept design of energy storage projects, applying Lightshift's standardized and modular design principles to individual sites;

• Prepare site layouts, single-line diagrams, and preliminary electrical and civil design documents;

• Perform equipment sizing and technology selection analysis based on project requirements, use case, and site constraints;

• Support interconnection applications and studies, including preparation of technical data and coordination with utilities;

• Assist with permitting deliverables and early-stage regulatory and safety code compliance (e.g., NFPA 855, UL 9540A) review;

• Conduct research on emerging technologies, suppliers, and industry trends and summarize findings for the engineering team;

• Contribute to technical documentation, design basis reports, and specifications used to support project financing and procurement;

• Participate in project meetings and present technical information to internal stakeholders.

• Lightshift's Arlington, VA headquarters

Compensation & Benefits:

• Salary range: $75,000 – $110,000;

• Full benefits package, including 401k, health/dental/vision insurance, paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, and short term disability.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in a technical discipline, preferably electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field;

• 0 – 2+ years of professional experience

Preferred Skills:

• Strong organizational, time management, and attention-to-detail skills

• Outstanding problem solving, analytical, and verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to work self-sufficiently and as a team member

• Familiarity with AutoCAD and Python (or other CAD tools and programming languages)

• Exposure to power systems fundamentals, electrical design, or interconnection processes is a plus

• Knowledge of the electric utility industry and electric energy markets is a plus
