Job Description
About Moon
Moon is an ambitious, independent vertical SaaS company incubated by Home Organizers, a market leader with decades of proven success in home organization through its subsidiaries, including Closet World, Closets by Design, and Brio Water Technology. Born inside one of the industry's largest operators — 6,000+ employees, hundreds of thousands of new customers served annually — Moon is built on a rare advantage: we build for the home improvement industry from within it.
Our mission is to reinvent the home improvement experience end to end. From AI-driven marketing and in-home 3D design to sales, service, and operations, Moon unifies the entire customer and business journey on a single platform — supercharged by Luna, our proprietary AI engine. Where most operators stitch together disconnected tools that don't understand the homeowner, we're building the unified operating system the industry has never had. We're a rapidly growing team of committed builders, driven to reimagine how this industry sells, designs, and delivers — and to power the next generation of operators, from single-location dealers to national franchise networks.
We are looking for an Engineering Manager, 3D Platform to lead the development and evolution of Moon's real-time 3D design platform.
This is a highly technical, hands-on leadership role for someone with deep experience building browser-based 3D applications, parametric design systems, and high-performance graphics experiences.
Our 3D platform is used by designers in customers' homes to configure and visualize highly customizable products in real time. The experience must translate complex product rules, dimensions, components, and constraints into an intuitive design environment that performs reliably on tablets.
You will own the architecture and technical direction of this platform while building and leading the engineering team responsible for it. We are looking for a player-coach who can establish architectural standards, develop engineers, review complex technical decisions, and still get into the code when needed.
About the roleYou will own a product area that is core to how our customers sell. The 3D experience runs on tablets, in customers' homes, in front of homeowners - and it must be fast, reliable, and beautiful everywhere it runs.
What you'll do- Build, hire, mentor, and lead a high-performing engineering team dedicated to Moon's 3D platform.
- Own the architecture, technical strategy, and engineering roadmap for our real-time 3D design and configuration environment.
- Lead the development of parametric product configuration capabilities, enabling complex products to be dynamically generated and modified based on dimensions, constraints, rules, and component relationships.
- Drive development of sophisticated 3D environment and spatial design tools, including CAD-like functionality for creating, manipulating, measuring, positioning, and configuring products within a room or design space.
- Own rendering architecture and performance across Three.js, React Three Fiber, WebGL, and emerging WebGPU technologies.
- Establish and maintain strict library and API boundaries, ensuring the 3D platform remains modular, scalable, maintainable, and easy for other engineering teams to build upon.
- Optimize real-time 3D performance for tablet environments, including rendering performance, memory utilization, responsiveness, and reliability in real-world customer environments.
- Work closely with Product and Design to translate complex product and design requirements into intuitive, high-performance user experiences.
- Establish engineering standards around testing, versioned releases, documentation, observability, performance budgets, and code quality.
- Take ownership of an existing and evolving codebase, improving architecture and technical quality without disrupting product delivery.
- Stay hands-on: review architecture and code, troubleshoot complex rendering and performance issues, and contribute directly when needed.
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience leading teams responsible for 3D graphics, visualization, CAD, gaming, real-time rendering, or similar technically complex products.
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing strong engineers while remaining technically hands-on.
- Deep production experience with Three.js is required.
- Strong production experience with WebGL and a deep understanding of browser-based graphics and rendering pipelines.
- Experience with or strong knowledge of WebGPU and modern GPU-accelerated web application development.
- Strong experience with React Three Fiber or comparable frameworks used to build sophisticated interactive 3D applications.
- Experience developing parametric product configuration or parametric modeling systems, where geometry and product configurations are dynamically generated from rules, dimensions, constraints, or product data.
- Experience building 3D environment design, spatial planning, CAD, or CAD-like tools, including manipulation of geometry, dimensions, objects, constraints, snapping, placement, and spatial relationships.
- Strong understanding of the iOS/iPadOS environment and the technical considerations involved in delivering high-performance browser-based or native/hybrid 3D applications on tablets.
- Strong understanding of graphics performance optimization, including frame rates, GPU/CPU utilization, memory management, asset optimization, scene complexity, and rendering performance.
- Strong library/API boundary discipline, with demonstrated experience designing clean interfaces between complex systems and resisting unnecessary coupling.
- Experience taking ownership of a substantial existing codebase and improving its architecture while maintaining product velocity.
- Strong systems thinking and problem-solving abilities with the ability to translate complex technical problems into scalable solutions.
- A player-coach mentality comfortable leading a team while still reading code, reviewing architecture, debugging difficult problems, and shipping when necessary.
