POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Engineering 1 is a foundational role at Creation Technologies, focused on executing moderate to moderately complex engineering tasks required in the creation, configuration and optimization of industrial processes required to produce and/or test Circuit Card Assemblies (CCAs) and/or box assemblies. This entry-level engineering position is crucial for those starting their career in electronics manufacturing services, providing an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting while developing first areas of subject matter expertise and learning industry standards and practices. This role supports engineering activities under the guidance of Engineering Management. It’s a role that combines hands-on experience with professional growth, offering insights into manufacturing processes and a pathway for future advancement in the field.
REPORTING STRUCTURE: Reports to Engineering Manager
DIRECT REPORTS (if applicable): N/A
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but not limited to:
- Engages in the setup and process readiness of manufacturing processes, including equipment & tooling, while ensuring optimal performance and adherence to safety standards.
- Demonstrates a foundational understanding of electronics principles and manufacturing services processes.
- Executes standard engineering projects and tasks, including prototype projects, and performs routine technical work within the engineering team, ensuring compliance with quality standards and that products meet customer required specifications and standards. Escalates issues as necessary.
- Engages in the documentation of manufacturing processes and procedures, ensuring accurate records and adherence to protocols.
- Aids in maintaining and/or troubleshooting the equipment, tools and tooling necessary for electronic manufacturing processes, minimizing downtime, and maintaining production efficiency. Can support other business functions as required.
- Supports the troubleshooting and repair of products, as required.
- Collaborates effectively within the engineering team, other functions, and 3rd party partners, communicating technical information clearly and contributing to operational goals.
- Supports continuous improvement / improved productivity efforts, by providing feedback on existing processes and participating in new process development.
- Supports root cause corrective and preventive actions as required.
- May provide guidance to interns and/or technicians.
- Process Engineering 1 Specific:
- Executes process engineering tasks and activities under the direction of Process Engineering management.
- Develops specific knowledge of aspects of the PCBA and/or box build process, including but not limited to:
- SMT equipment, tooling, materials, and processes.
- Auto insertion, solder flow processes and cleaning processes
- Automated labelling, marking, conformal coating, potting and manual/auto assembly.
- Box build manufacturing techniques.
- Assists with the implementation, qualification and validation of new process technologies and equipment, ensuring seamless integration into production.
- Participates in the validation of process changes, documenting outcomes and adjusting procedures as necessary.
- Perform Design for Manufacture / Assembly analysis with cross functional teams.
- Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) and analyzes data to identify and resolve systemic process and performance issues.
- Contributes to continuous improvement initiatives for process optimization, cost reduction, and enhanced yield and quality.
- Participates in the research and evaluation of new process technologies and materials to enhance production capabilities.
- Provides technical training and support to manufacturing trainers or personnel to improve overall capabilities and knowledge.
- Supports PCBA & box-build production, as required, in routine matters.
- Assists in the documentation and maintenance of equipment, ensuring they are up-to-date and effective, and aligned with product specifications. Uses Computerized Maintenance Management System.
- Manufacturing Engineering 1 Specific:
- Executes MFG engineering tasks and activities under the direction of Manufacturing Engineering management.
- Ability to work with and familiar with PLM and MES systems.
- Ensures the translation of customer requirements to assembly and test processes by Managing Bill
- of Materials (BOM), document control, and validates routing; supports New Product Introduction
- (NPI) and Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes.
- Engages in detailed manufacturing process documentation, including work instructions, as received
- from customer, and prepped for release to production floor.
- Create Assembly documents, Bill of Process and SMT/AOI Machine files (use of CAM350, Factory Logix, or other MES and CAD/CAM software).
- Generate, and support the control, and distribution of manufacturing process documentation including Process Plans and Procurement specifications.
- Perform Design for Manufacture analysis with cross functional teams and reporting.
- Supports schedules for engineering projects, including coordinating tasks and resources for above schedule within the engineering team.
- Participates in cross-functional teams to support manufacturing process improvements to enhance production efficiency and product quality.
- Supports the review and update of manufacturing procedures to ensure they are current and effective.
- Provides technical support to the manufacturing team, aiding in the resolution of engineering issues that affect production and prevent continuous production flow.
- Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) and analyzes data to identify and resolve systemic process and performance issues.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and Required Experience
- Bachelor's Degree (4 year) in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial, Mechatronic, or other relevant discipline) or a related field with a focus on electronics and manufacturing processes or equivalent industry or military training experience.
- New graduates or candidates with up to 4 years of engineering support experience in electronics manufacturing preferred.
Skills Required
- Ability to interpret a variety of technical documents such as wiring diagrams and drawings effectively.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and quality standards such as ISO9001/13485 or AS9100.
- Understanding of the concepts of New Product Introduction and how to execute projects including supporting functions.
- Understands and can execute Design for Assembly and Test tasks as required.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to safety guidelines.
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Capacity to learn and apply new skills in a dynamic manufacturing services environment.
- Awareness of IPC standards, Lean principles, six sigma and industrial ergonomics preferred.
- Proficient in using Computer systems and knowledge of CAD/CAM and programming preferred.
- Engineering project management and project leadership skills an asset.
