Energy Attorney in Salt Lake City, Utah at Western Electricity Coordinating Council

To help us deliver on our mission of a highly reliable and secure bulk power system in the Western Interconnection, we are seeking an Energy Attorney to help us further our mission and achieve our business goals.

The Energy Attorney assists in protecting the legal interests of the organization and ensures that the organization’s operations are within the scope of the law and its governing documents, including its Bylaws and Delegation Agreement. This position provides legal counsel to all levels and all parts of the organization on a wide variety of legal issues.

While WECC's headquarters are located in Salt Lake City, Utah, this position is remote eligible for candidates residing in the Lower 48 states. Time spent traveling is expected to be a minimum of 5–10% for this role, though business needs may require additional travel on occasion.

• Provide legal advice and support to all WECC departments and employees on a wide variety of legal issues.
• Provide legal support on WECC’s contract and procurement activities, including drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts and other procurement documents
• Provide legal advice on WECC’s reliability standard development, compliance monitoring and enforcement, and reliability assessment activities.
• Provide legal advice on the identification, protection, and sharing of confidential information.
• Provide legal advice on the governance of WECC consistent with its corporate governance documents (e.g., bylaws, delegation agreement, rules of procedure, etc.).
• Provide legal support on WECC corporate policies, including drafting and reviewing corporate policies
• Support WECC’s enterprise risk and insurance activities.
• Provide legal support to WECC’s technical and other committees.
• Provide legal support to audits of WECC’s regulatory activities and in other areas.
• Monitor and analyze emerging policy, regulatory, reliability, and market rule developments affecting the Western Interconnection

• Have a Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school and are licensed to practice law in a least one U.S. state.
• Have a minimum of three years’ experience practicing as an attorney in areas of law related to utilities, energy, regulation, compliance, or a related field or as in-house counsel.
• Have a strong background in energy policy.
• Have experience analyzing and summarizing complex information for business and management audiences.
• Have experience preparing reports, summaries, presentations, and briefing materials.
• Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Can interpret and synthesize complex policy, regulatory, and technical information.
• Have strong written communication skills with the ability to create concise executive summaries.
• Can convey technical subject matter in understandable business terms.
• Have strong research and information-gathering capabilities.
• Can identify trends, emerging risks, and strategic implications.
• Possess strong computer literacy and proficiency using PCs, including a working knowledge of common applications such as those in the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Understand and adhere to sound principles of cybersecurity, including protecting sensitive information, using secure passwords, and following organizational cybersecurity protocols.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $111,200–$139,000 + discretionary pay + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and mid-point for the position across all locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
